  14. The Key beliefs of Catholic Christians • We believe in one God (Triune: Father, Son and Spirit) • God is revealed in Holy Scripture and Tradition • We are made in the image of God • God loves us and freely gave Jesus to save us • We encounter God especially through the 7 Sacraments(Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders.) • God calls us to action (WWJD)

  15. What We Believe The Nicene Creed

  16. The Nicene Creed We believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

  17. St John’s Model In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things came to be. Creator, Word,Spirit LOVE Word Spirit

  18. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, • the only Son of God, • eternally begotten of the Father, • God from God, • Light from Light, • true God from true God,

  19. begotten, not made, • Of one in Being with the Father. • Through him all things were made. • For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: • by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made a man.

  20. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; • he suffered, died, and was buried. • On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; • He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

  21. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, • and His kingdom will have no end.

  22. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, • who proceeds from the Father and the Son. • With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. • He has spoken through the Prophets.

  23. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. • We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. • We look for the resurrection of the dead, • and the life of the world to come. • Amen.

  24. Lord's Prayer Most Christians know the words to the “Lord’s Prayer,” which they say during religious ceremonies. Introduced by Jesus in the New Testament (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4), the prayer includes an introduction followed by seven petitions. The structure of the prayer (the first three petitions concerned with the glory of God and the last four a list of human concerns) and its content make it the perfect prayer of the Christian faith, which stresses the importance of God over humanity.

  25. The Catholic Liturgical Calendar

  26. 1. Human dignity The person is sacred, made in the image of God.

  27. 2. Community / Common Good The social nature of the human person The fact that human beings are social by nature indicates that the betterment of the person and the improvement of society depend on each other.…humanity by its very nature stands completely in need of life in society. Vatican II, The Church in the Modern World “Every man for himself,” said the elephant as he danced among the chickens.Charles Dickens

  28. 3. Rights and duties • Civil/political • Economic/social Every person has a right to the basic material necessities that are required to live a decent life.

  29. 4. Option for the Poor • Remember the “widows, orphans, and aliens.” • A necessary element of the common good 5. Participation All people have a right to a minimum level of participation in the economic, political, and cultural life of society

  30. 6. Economic Justice • The economy must serve people, not the other way around. People are more important than things; labor is more important than capital. • All workers have a right to productive work, to decent wages, to safe working conditions; and they have a right to organize and join unions. • People have a right to economic initiative and private property, but these rights have limits. No one is allowedto amass excessive wealth when others lack the basic necessities of life.

  31. 7. Stewardship of Creation The goods of the earth are gifts. We hold them in trust, as stewards. “God destined the earth and all it contains for all people and nations so that all created things would be shared fairly by all humankind under the guidance of justice tempered by charity.” On the Development of Peoples

  32. 8. The Virtue of Solidarity “It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good; that is to say, to the good of all ...because we are all really responsible for all.”Pope John Paul II, On Social Concern, 1987

  33. Role of Government • The state has a positive moral function. It is an instrument to promote human dignity, protect human rights, and build the common good • Subsidiarity • As small as possible • As big as necessary

  34. 10. Promotion of Peace • Peace is not just the absence of war • “If you want peace, work for justice”

  35. Making Meaning: Secularism

  36. What is Secularism? • The separation of religion and state is the foundation of secularism. • It intends to ensure that religious groups don't interfere in affairs of state, and makes sure the state doesn't interfere in religious affairs • Secularism claims not to be about limiting religious freedoms; it is about ensuring that the freedoms of thought and conscience apply equally to all - believers and non-believers alike www.secularism.org.uk

  37. So… what is Secularism? • Basically, Secularism is a view of the world which holds that God plays no part in human life • Other people have the ‘right’ to believe in God if they wish, but this should have no influence on other members of society.

  38. What is Materialism? • the theory of materialism holds that all things are composed of material, and that everything (including consciousness) is the result of material properties and interactions. In other words, the theory claims that our reality consists entirely of physical matter that is the sole cause of every possible occurrence, including human thought, feeling, and action.

  39. So… what is Secular Materialism? • The primary drive in life is to be personally happy. This is believed to come from success in the material world and may include: • Career • Relationships • Financial Wealth • Status (position in society) • Freedom to do “what I want”
