1. State President’s Message Mamie K. Taylor, Leader, Organizer, Legend This is the thirtieth anniversary of the death of the founder of Women/Citizens of Georgia Power. Mamie Kennedy Taylor died on October 23, 1982. She was 82. The photo at right was taken in January of that year when she was still “consulting” with the state coordinator. Mary Elizabeth Smith was coordinator at the time of MKT’s death. Mamie K. started her career as a penny counter in an ice company owned by Georgia Railway and Electric Co. She served as local manager, home service supervisor, division home service supervisor and administrative assistant to the president of Georgia Power during her 44-year career. Atlanta chose her as Woman of the Year in 1945, and she was named president of Pilot Club International for 1950-1951. She served as president of the YWCA, the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Georgia Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. Ms. Taylor served as chairman of the Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women under Governor Carl E. Sanders. In the commission’s first year, three major pieces of legislation were passed: The Uniform Simultaneous Death Act, the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, and a bill making the commission a permanent body. She served as the very first chairman of the Georgia March of Dimes. Despite suffering polio, which left her with a slight walking disability, she was active and outspoken in her opinions and dreams. She always wanted to make things better – especially for women. She would certainly be pleased at the continued success of the organization she founded in 1962! Mamie K. Taylor in January 1982 Ashley Koby • I find it difficult to believe that we are fast approaching our • annual meeting and the completion of a very successful • year “Lighting Up Lives”. It’s the time of year when all of • the chapters have completed selecting the charities in their • area to receive the donations from the Chapter Matching • Funds Program. This program makes it possible for each • chapter to earn up to $5000 during the year and have that • amount matched by the Foundation in 1 or 2 donations to • local 501-C-3 charities. This doubles the impact we have on • our local communities. • We are fortunate to work for a company that is “A Citizen • Wherever We Serve” and funds this program to enhance the • value of our organization. • Since the program began, our chapters have worked hard to • raise funds and meet the maximum available. Here’s a • recap on what you’ve done: • 2007 – 191,800 • 2008 – 195,400 • 2009 – 212,200 • 2010 - 225,700 • 2011 – 231,000 • 2012 – 233,000 • Through this program alone you’ve made $1,289,100 in • donations to local charities. That’s just one of the great • things you do year after year. • It’s still tough out there financially for a lot of people and • YOUR hard work helps ease the burden for many. Keep up • the good work and know how much what you do matters!

Komen is Oct. 27. • Annual Meeting is Nov.10 in Macon. Kia Raffle – Top Chapters for Sales Thanks again to everyone for their hard work on the recent Kia Raffle for Electric Kids. The drawing was held on September 6 in the Energy Exchange Luncheon at 241 Ralph McGill. Shown above is Sr. Vice President Kenneth Coleman who drew the winning ticket. He was assisted with the drawing by Past State President Zann Hayes. The raffle earned $51,806 for the charity. Lighting Up Lives Awards Four times during the year, we will recognize chapters chosen by the State Board for doing a GREAT job with projects, fundraising, membership drives, inputting information into CHARITY and CARES, and exemplifying what it means to be “A Citizen Wherever We Serve.” Nominations come from local management, state board members, and information submitted for the monthly Energizer. We are announcing the fourth quarter winners early in order for them to be recognized at Annual meeting. 3. 2nd Annual Kylan Warren Memorial Golf Tournament By the North Fulton Area Chapter Assisted by Gainesville Chapter Athens Chapter The $12,766 in proceeds from the tournament will be divided between the Grady Foundation and the Georgia Power Family House. Thanks to the 163 golfers who participated in this great event. Kylan Warren Stacey Compton, distribution support rep, Cameron Hardin, distribution engineer, and Cal Holloway, support rep sr., represented the Athens Chapter at the American Heart Association Heart Walk in Athens on September 20. The chapter promoted energy efficiency by distributing CFL light bulbs and literature on Georgia Power’s Energy Efficiency programs. On September 19 the Athens Chapter completed their United Way Day of Caring projects with the assembling of much needed storage shelving for the Family Counseling Services agency.  The group assembled eight five-shelf units and moved them to the locations where they were needed.  Pictured from left to right:  Karl Langenbach, Cameron Hardin, Cal Holloway, Martin Kimsey, Nathan Bartlett, Shane Goodman and Brooks Glisson.  Kylan’s father sponsored a team. 4. Augusta Chapter Keep Columbia Beautiful Columbus Chapter Supports Heart Association The Columbus Chapter hosted a Tennis Fun Play Day on Saturday, September 15 at the Whisperwood Tennis Community to raise money for the American Heart Association.  This event was also held to recognize National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  There were 23 children and 10 adults that took place in this fun-filled event.  Also, two professional tennis instructors assisted by providing lessons and organizing games.  The event was a huge success raising $904 for the AHA.  Special thanks to David Griffin, project champion, for organizing and facilitating the event. On September 22, eleven Augusta Chapter members and family cleaned up ten large bags of trash and several large objects on their adopted mile in front of the Evans Headquarters. The Augusta Chapter does quarterly clean ups in support of Keep Columbia County Beautiful’s Adopt a Road program. Heart of GA/Macon at the Heart Walk Members of the Heart of GA/Macon chapter participated in the Heart Walk on September 17. The team raised $900. 5. Tallulah Falls Honors Their Charter Member and Celebrates 50 Years Clayton Chapter Hosts Membership Family Dinner There are fourteen local chapters that are charter chapters of our organization. Tallulah Falls is one of those. They took the opportunity at their September 25 meeting to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary with a delicious Italian dinner provided by members. In addition, they took this opportunity to “surprise” charter member Faye Gray with recognition for her fifty years of membership. Mrs. Gray’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were also invited to join in the recognition program at the end of the meeting. State Board Member Cheryl Davis, who serves as the chapter relationship chair for the group with Tallulah Falls, and State Coordinator Peggy Grubb attended. The tables were decorated with special “Lighting Up Lives” décor! The Clayton Chapter hosted a membership family dinner meeting on Monday night, September 24, at the Creek Bank. There were 53 in attendance. State Board member John Cornelius attended. The food and fellowship were great! Peggy Grubb presents a special gift to Faye. H L Thomas Serves Dinner to Cancer Patients and Caregivers On Wednesday night, September 26, members of the H L Thomas Chapter served dinner to 60 cancer patients and caregivers staying at the Hope Lodge. 6. Forest Park Chapter - CAN Hunger Several Chapters Support Atlanta’s Heart Walk on September 22 The Forest Park Chapter collected and donated 2700 lbs of canned and dry-good food to the Clayton County Food Pantry for their annual CAN Hunger Drive. The Carrollton Chapter raised $3,064 for The American Heart Association. April Hale served as the team captain. Two volunteers from Metro West Chapter joined with the Carrollton Chapter for the Annual Heart Walk. The Jefferson Street Chapter had a pancake breakfast and other normal fundraising activities for the Heart Walk team. They had a new project selling “support hearts” for $1 each. They did a challenge between the different managers and their groups to see who could sell the most. They raised $425 from the sale of the hearts. They actually used the trail of hearts and incorporated posters on heart healthy facts to help educate employees throughout the location. You can also see their “Let’s CAN Hunger” collection barrel in one photo. In total, the team donated $860 to the Heart Association. Heart of GA/Macon Serves Up Ice Cream and Desserts The Heart of GA/Macon Chapter invited all employees to a treat of free homemade ice cream and desserts to say thank you for a great year. They also signed up 7 new members at the September 26 event.

7. Spotlight on Gwinnett Chapter’s October Activities Gwinnett Chapter participated in the 6th Annual Georgia Race for Autism & Fall Festival on Saturday, October 6th. This event was part of the 13th Annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service which included over 400 community project involving 75,000 volunteers throughout Gwinnett County. The chapter had a dozen volunteers working on four shifts throughout the day from 6 am until 4 pm at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. The volunteers assisted with setting up the course, working water stations, breaking down the stations, helping with the festival activities, and cleaning up at the conclusion of the event. The chapter is also busy in October with their CAN Hunger Drive! Mary Ann Manley Electric Kids Golf Tournament The Gwinnett Chapter held its Annual Mary Ann Manley Electric Kids Golf Tournament on October 3rd. Over 30 teams participated in the tournament at Lake Lanier Island Legacy Golf Course. The Gwinnett Chapter raised nearly $7,500 with the tournament registration, raffle items and silent auction gifts. All proceeds from this tournament will assist the Electric Kids charity. Debra Hayeschaired this event with support from 15 volunteers that helped organize and manage this tournament.
