  1. Principal Investigator: Nina Wallerstein, DrPH UNM Center for Participatory Research Co-Investigator: Kevin Shendo, Education Director Pueblo of Jemez, Department of Education The RezRIDERS Project 2011 Pilot Funded by UNM CTSC Presented by Nina Wallerstein May 24th, 2011 NMCARES Health Disparities Conference Albuquerque, New Mexico

  2. One-Year Pilot Aims: CTSC min-grant Aim One: Use a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) process to develop a Tribal Research Team (TRT), overseeing all aspects of the RezRIDERS Project. • TRT representation includes: • Tribal Education Department • Tribal Youth Project (Tribal Government Program) • Tribal Wellness Program (Jemez Health & Human Services) • Community Leadership • Stakeholders feel program meets many needs involving youth and community • Some TRT members aware of RezRIDERS development for years Aim Two: Train and Pilot-test an abbreviated version of RezRIDERS with TRT members; TRT will revise based on process and outcome evaluation data for R-34 implementation. • Pilot abbreviated version of curriculum • Revise curriculum and make specific to Pueblo of Jemez

  3. Abbreviated RezRIDERS Curriculum Snowboarding & Core Values: 3-Days (Pride, Purpose, Responsibility) • Mentors initiated program by identifying adult TRT core values- each value will be discussed and emphasized during daylong snowboard sessions. Identified core values will be integrated into the full program version, and reinforced through Community Action Projects (CAPs). • Youth participants will define their own core values, challenging mentors to connect with community core values, as example. White Water Rafting & Optimism: 1-Day • Provides environments that promote autonomy, competence, and connection. Stimulates learning and promotes optimistic thinking. • River obstacles resemble life challenges, where mastery of river currents (navigation) on raft offers experiential education opportunity. With youth, mentors will tie the experience to CAPs. CAPs & Empowerment: TBD • Mentors identify community concerns (i.e. needs, opportunities) and engage in actions for change. • RezRIDERS returns skills to the community, through goal setting, problem solving and planning while utilizing core values, optimism, self-determination and team building experiencesgained from Extreme Sport challenge.

  4. Next Steps: • Submit NIDA R34: 3-year application (June 2011) • Pilot a TRT revised, RezRIDERS curriculum (Full Version) • Testing efficacy of intervention • Extreme Sport as prevention strategy • Culturally connected mentorship • Prevention/Intervention Program Capacity • Substance Abuse • Prepare for NIDA R01: 5-year study (2014) • Expansion to other tribes who expressed interest in RR • Expand research design with delayed intervention groups Thank you!
