    1. High School Feedback ReportingTaking the Lead David Volkman, Executive Assistant Office of Elementary and Secondary Education September 13-14, 2011 1

    2. What is HS Feedback Reporting? • Pennsylvania has undertaken a project to develop high school feedback reports based on the postsecondary student-level data we are now collecting in PIMS including data from the National Student Clearinghouse. • Feedback reports will be based on the postsecondary enrollments and performance of the high school’s graduating students.

    3. Project Goals • The High School Feedback Reporting initiative aims to • Enhance the ability of schools, districts, and PDE to report on the progress of high school students into and through postsecondary education. • Provide educators with aggregate actionable and timely data to raise student achievement by informing and improving their instructional practice and curriculum. • The ultimate goal of the project is to increase college readiness and improve student postsecondary performance. 3

    4. LEA Focus Groups • Conducted 5 Focus groups throughout the state soliciting feedback from 27 LEAs • Majority of Participants were either District Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Principals, Assistant Principals • Besides school districts and charter schools, CTCs were also represented 4

Building the Case for HS Feedback:The “Good” News • 7 out of 10 Pennsylvania high school graduates plan to continue their education beyond high school. • Pennsylvania ranks 7th in the percentage of full time college students who complete their bachelor’s degree. • High school graduation in Pennsylvania is 82.7% which is above the national average.

    6. Building the Case for HS Feedback:The “Challenges” • Persistent achievement gaps still exist in the US. • CCSSO reported that there needs to be greater alignment between secondary and post-secondary education; Disconnect is profound. • Higher Ed. denotes entry level competencies are a major concern due to disparate curriculums at the secondary level. • This impacts the need for “developing a standardized curricular framework for English and mathematics courses.”

    7. What is Included? • The reports will provide a framework to begin discussions about actionable data for high school educators to inform and improve their instructional practice, curriculum, etc. • The feedback reports will include detailed data from the 14 Community Colleges and the 14 PASSHE institutions and enrollment and graduation data from the National Student Clearinghouse.
