  2. 1. What's wrong with cheating? How does cheating hurt the student who cheats? The student doesn't learn the material taught in the course. The student's confidence in their ability to succeed goes down. How does cheating hurt other students? Other students see cheating and get discouraged or afraid that their grade will be lower.

  3. How could students' cheating hurt Dixie State University? Students who aren't qualified may graduate. The university's reputation could suffer. The value of all degrees will go down.

  4. How does cheating hurt future employers, coworkers, clients, or patients of students who cheated? The employee will not do as good a job, creating problems for the employer and coworkers. Clients and patients will receive inferior service. Students who cheated are more likely to become employees who cheat as well.

Why do some students cheat? 1) They don't know it is wrong. 2) They see others do it and think it's ok. 3) They feel great pressure to succeed and don't know how else to get good grades. 4) They think a course is too easy and not worth their time. 5) They think a course is too hard and the only way to get a good grade is to cheat. 6) They are too lazy to do the work required. 7) They think they deserve a good grade because of who they are instead of their work. Have you ever been tempted by any of these excuses? Do any of these excuses justify cheating? NO!

  7. 4. Who's job is it to stop cheating? What should professors do? Professors should make sure assignments are not trivial or too difficult. They should also design assignments to discourage cheating. What should students do for each other? Students should encourage each other to be honest, and report cheating to their professor. What should each student do for him/herself? Each student should take responsibility for his or her academic success!

  8. What should you do if you discover cheating by another student? You must report it in writing to professor within 15 days. Otherwise, you could get in trouble too. If you are not sure if something is cheating, who should you ask? Ask the professor, (or someone at ISS).

  11. 5. How can you decide if something is cheating? If you put your name on it, it means you are saying that it is your work! If something gives you an unfair advantage over other students, it is cheating!

Also indicate which are really bad cheating. a) The professor says you can look up words in your dictionary on your phone during an exam; you also store some formulas to use on the exam. b) After completing your homework, you use a copy of a homework assignment from last semester with corrected answers on it to correct your answers. c) You get together a group of students to study for an exam, and explain the concepts to each other. d) You are assigned to give a speech about an American holiday in ESL; your roommate writes the speech and you give it. e) You ask a friend who looks like you to take a test in your place. f) You copy the answers to a homework assignment from a classmate because you were too sick to do it yourself.

You ask the professor's permission to use it. m) A fellow student offers to pay you so he can use a paper you wrote last year for the same class with another professor. You agree. n) You go to the Writing Center for help with a paper, but you don't understand their instructions, so you get help from a roommate instead who rewrites the paper for you.

  14. 6. How can you avoid the temptation to cheat? Rate the following on how important they could be in helping you to maintain your academic integrity. 3 = very useful 2 = somewhat useful 1 = not very useful _____ Make sure you understand what behaviors constitute cheating. _____ Make sure you know what is and is not allowed in each of your classes. _____ Make a commitment to yourself that you will avoid all behaviors that are not honest. _____ Don't get yourself into a situation that makes you feel like the only way to succeed is to cheat. _____ Don't put off studying for an important exam. _____ Don't wait until the last minute to start on papers or projects. _____ Make sure you understand what constitutes plagiarism. _____ When writing a paper, take notes in your own words; use your notes, not the source, to write. _____ If you have personal problems, health problems, etc, approach your professor to ask for help. Write a few sentences below that explain how you will avoid the temptation to cheat.
