  2. Definition • A member of the lowest feudal class, attached to the land owned by a lord and required to perform labor in return for certain legal or customary rights. • Pretty much a slave

  3. Origins in Russia • Serfdom first appeared in Russia in the 11th century. • However, it was not widespread until Mikhail Romanov came into power

  4. Runaway Serfs • Laws were passed which restricted free movement of peasants, which lead most of them into serfdom. • This lead to many runaway serfs • The Соборное уложение (Code of law) of 1649 introduced an open ended search for all serfs on the run and any who were caught were returned to their owners.

  5. Serf Rebellions • There were many rebellions lead by serfs, but most resulted in nothing. • Many rebellions happened together with Cossack uprisings • Between 1775 and 1861, there was never a time when all of the peasants were at complete peace.

  6. End of Serfdom • From 1816-1819, serfdom was abolished across Russia in Estland, Courland, and Livonia. • In 1861, Serfdom was totally abolished in Russia by the Emancipation Reform of 1861.
