  1. The Pituitary Gland AKA: The Hypophysis

  2. Two Glands: The Anterior and Posterior Pituitary Gland

  3. Hormones of the Anterior Pituitary (adenohypophysis) • Tropic Hormone- a hormone that regulates the function of another endocrine gland. • The anterior pituitary regulates function of cells in the : • Thyroid • Adrenal cortex • Ovaries • Testes • Organs of the body, including: breast, uterus, kidneys and other somatic cells

  4. Hormones of the Anterior Pituitary (adenohypophysis)

  5. Hormones of the Posterior Pituitary (neurohypophysis) • Antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin are hormones secreted by the posterior pituitary. Both are produced by cells of the hypothalamus and are 9 amino acids long. • The posterior pituitary affects function of cells in the: • Kidney • Smooth muscle in uterus and breast

  6. Hormones of the Posterior Pituitary (neurohypophysis)

  7. Review All actions of the pituitary gland are controlled by the hypothalamus, located directly above the gland and connected to it by the infundibulum. The anterior pituitary gland regulates the function of several other glands through the secretion of tropic hormones (ACTH, TSH, FSH and LH). It also synthesizes and secretes GH and PRL. The posterior pituitary gland secretes oxytocin and ADH, which are synthesized in the hypothalamus. These hormones affect cells in the kidneys, breast and uterus. The pituitary gland is often referred to as the “master gland” because of the wide-ranging effects of the hormones it secretes.
