  1. EAR-1 beamline update Oliver Aberle, EN/STI 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting Wednesday, 5 March 2014

  2. Outline • Collimator No. 1: Alignment • Filter box - Renovation • Vacuumwindow, valveandcollimatorNo. 2 • Access system modifications • General consolidation (magnet, cooling station, vacuum and RP monitoring) • Summary 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  3. Collimator No. 1 Fixed tube Ø400 Filter box New bellows DN160 New bellow DN160 Collimator 1 shifted downstream 206 mm 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  4. Collimator No. 1 Shieldingdismantled Chamber has been removed and cut in two Modification done in radioactive workshop Remountingandalignmentplannedfor end of April 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  5. Filter box • Chamber with ports will remain unchanged • Flanges and numbers of feed-through remain unchanged • Actuators and limit switches to be changed 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  6. Proposed filter box composition 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  7. Filter box • Improved support structure • Flange and material holder kept • Principle maintained (compressed air actuator) • Jacks replaced with standard commercial components 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  8. Background improvement on EAR1 • Reduce free passage through the wall to ~10 cmAlignmentoffirstpartofthe beam line: Early May • New window, smaller diameter, upstream of collimator No 2. • Kapton windows in EAR1 • Space of 30 cm createdto host sample holder.Alignmentof last partofthe beam lineand EAR 1: End of June Kapton window 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  9. Vacuum window • Al window in front of collimator No. 2 (thickness 0.3 mm, Ø DN 100, compliant to resist a shock wave) • Second window at the entry of EAR 1 still needed(Kapton, e.g. Ø 65 mm/0.1 mm) • Keep DN 400 valve BEAM • Prepare for a sample holder- Depending on dimensions, we need to shift the collimator downstream - Position of collimator unchanged Window with vacuum bypass - Shorten upstream vacuum chamber instead Valve DN400 - Similar design as the filter box actuators Space gain to integrate sample holder 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  10. Vacuumwindow Cut vacuumchamberby 300 mm Shiftsupportupstream 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  11. Alignment in EAR 1 (and EAR 2) • Line lasers ordered • 5 laser / experimental area to be installed • Marking of flanges, set-up by survey • The opening angle of the selected line laser is 35 degrees, which results in a line that is half the length of the working distance • 4 horizontal lines, 1 vertical 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  12. Access system Access system fullyrenewed (generalactivity in the PS complex) 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  13. Access system • « IMPACT » already in place • Entrance to n_TOF primary area is centrally managed • RP presence for work in target area and cooling station mandatory • Patrol for primary and secondary area to be done by n_TOF • Access system tests for EAR 1 (ongoing) and EAR 2 (in June) • Check your access rights, requests and training courses 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  14. Consolidation • Old magnet, power supply without spare parts  • Vacuum layout modifications (first collimator, window) • RP monitoring (e.g. Cooling water sampling) • Implementing existing equipment into the new DAQ  3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday

  15. Summary • Vacuum layout modification and re-alignment of collimator No. 1 • Filter box renovation (8 slots?), new filter box actuators for EAR 2 with 8 slots • New vacuum window to reduce background in EAR 1 and higher safety • Improvement of alignment with line lasers • New access system in place for start up in 2014 • General consolidation of the installation ongoing 3rd n_TOF Technical Meeting, Wednesday
