During this period, each student works closely with an advisor who helps determine his or her choice of courses and who designs a personalized reading list (i.e. a bibliography of fundamental research). The first year ends with a major field exam (late June), followed by a presentation of a draft of the student’s dissertation (in October-November). While writing the dissertation In view of highlighting research during the year of specialization, once dissertations are underway, several « Research and Debate »  sessions with the faculty will be organized by doctoral candidates. Moreover, candidates will be in charge of organizing a session with their advisors in view of writing their dissertations (methodology and/or argumentation), as part of the « Dissertation Follow-up ».
