  1. The Adventof Jesus Sometimes we preachers spend a lot of pulpit time on what could be termed “doctrinal matters,” and the issues of the day as they pertain to religion. Sadly, perhaps one of the themes pushed aside by these things is the study of Jesus Christ our Lord. While these other topics have their place, are they any more important than the central focal point of God’s entire plan for saving men’s souls? It is therefore important that we know all we possibly can about Jesus, the Christ. This lesson will attempt to briefly address 2 aspects of…

  2. What does adventmean? • Literally, it means arrival; therefore, it refers to the comingof Jesus. • For the purposes of this study, we will concentrate on the first(rather than the second ) coming of Jesus. • The term is commonly used to refer to Jesus’s arrivalon earth in human form. • But adventalso implies and requiresother important elements…

  3. The adventof Jesus implied His Pre-Existence. • One may arrive on the scene, but must also exist prior to arrival (even a baby does so). • O.T. proofs of Jesus’ pre-existence, Isa.9:6 (“Eternal Father” ); and Mic.5:2. • N.T. proofs of Jesus’ pre-existence take at least two forms: • Direct Statements- John 1:1,14and 8:58; • Logical Conclusions- Col.1:15-16(to have created all things, He must have existed prior)

  4. The adventof Jesus required His Incarnation. • Incarnateis not a biblical word, but it is a biblical concept (like Trinity in that regard). • It simply refers to that which is “invested with bodily and especially human nature and form” (Webster’s). The word comes from combining inwith the Latin carn, or caro(flesh); so is literally in (the)flesh. • Thus, Jesus needed to arrive in human form.

  5. The adventof Jesus required His Incarnation. • This was not a difficult problem for the Creator of all things! • Prophecy predicted Jesus would be born of a virgin, Isa.7:14. • Matt.1:16specifies Mary as the one “by whom” (feminine gender) Jesus was born, cf. Luke 3:23. Both accounts make it clear Mary was indeed “a virgin,” Mt.1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38. • Thus, Jesus was both the Son of God and the Son of Man- divine and human, Col.2:9!

  6. The adventof Jesus required His Incarnation. • Now let’s think a moment: God could have chosen any means at all to save mankind from sin, right? So, why did He choose incarnation? • The incarnate expression of Jesus Christ explainsdeity to humanity, John 1:17-18. How else could finite, physical, and human minds comprehend an infinite, spiritual, and divine God? Heb.1:3; John 14:9-10; 12:44-45

  7. The adventof Jesus required His Incarnation. • Also, • The incarnation of Jesus explainsgodly humanity to humanity, 1Pet.2:21-25. By living a sinless human life, Jesus provides the godly way to live as a human, Heb.4:14-16; Phil.2:3-13.

  8. The adventof Jesus required His Incarnation. • And finally, • The incarnation of Jesus providedthe perfect atoning sacrifice for humanity, Heb.10:1-14. The imperfect blood sacrifices that were offered previously could cleanse the fleshly (human) part of man, but only the perfect blood sacrifice of sinless man could cleanse the soul (divine) part of man, Heb.9:13-14.

  9. Conclusions: • The pre-existence of Jesus (implied by His incarnation) proves His divinity. • The incarnation of Jesus proves His humanity. • As the perfect combination of God and Man, His incarnation explained both God and the godly Man to us. Are you living according to these explanations?
