  1. The Four Sundays of “Advent.” • “Advent” means “coming" - referring to the coming of Jesus the Messiah, being born of a virgin, sent by His Father to be our Savior.

  2. The Four Sundays of “Advent.” • Churches may feature certain characters who played a role in the story, i.e., John the Baptist, the Shepherds, the Magi, and Mary. • Or perhaps organize the Sundays by topics such as Expectation, Annunciation, Proclamation, and Realization.

  3. The Four Sundays of “Advent.” • 1st - HOPE • 2nd -LOVE • 3rd -JOY • 4th -PEACE

  4. HOPE, as it relates to Christmas, has to do with a long standing expectation among the Jewish people. • During thousands of years before Christ, there was a longing and a hope for deliverance, hope for a Messiah.

  5. Luke 24:27 • "Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."

  6. Luke 24: 44, 45 • “Jesus told them, ‘'This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.’ Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures."

  7. Moses Pointed to Messiah • Genesis 3:15 • Genesis 49:10 - Hebrews 7:14 • Deuteronomy 18:15, 18

  8. Prophets Pointed to Messiah • Isaiah 7:14 - Matthew 1:23 • Isaiah 61 - Luke 4:18,19 • Isaiah 53:9 - Matthew 27:57-60 • Micah 5:2

  9. Prophets Pointed to Messiah • Zechariah 9:9 - Matthew 21:4, 5 • Zechariah 11:12, 13 – • Matthew 26:15; 27:9, 10 • Zechariah 13:7 - Matthew 26:31, 56

  10. Psalms Pointed to Messiah • Psalm 41:9 - John 13:18 • Psalm 22:1 - Matthew 27:46 • Psalm 22:16; 34:20 - John 19:36; 20:20,25 • Psalm 22:18 - Matthew 27:35

  11. Psalms Pointed to Messiah • Psalm 69:21 - Matthew 27:34 • Psalm 16:8-11 - Acts 2:25-27 • Psalm 68:18 - Ephesians 4:8 • Psalm 110:1 - Matthew 22:43-45

  12. During hundreds of years leading up to the coming of Christ, great hope had been rising in the hearts of the faithful. • Many believed that now their hope was being fulfilled, and that group became the compost from which would spring Christ's Church which in turn would change the history of the world.

  13. The faithful Old Testament • believers listed in Hebrews 11, many of whom suffered and died for their adherence to the truth, had great hope, but did not live long enough to see the fulfillment of the promises that gave them the hope. • We, however, have seen it.

  14. Part of the truth related to the first advent is that there is a second. Jesus said that He will come again, and we are now in the waiting period during which time the only thing that keeps us going is the same hope - the Messiah will come again.

  15. As we approach this year's reminder of the Advent, and come to appreciate the fact that the hope of ages was fulfilled in the coming of the Christ, let us also be filled with renewed hope in His Second Advent.
