  1. The Hubble Space Telescope National College Iasi

  2. HST The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was carried into orbit by a space shuttle in 1990. Although not the first space telescope, Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile, and is well-known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. National College Iasi

  3. Why HST? • The HST was built by the United States space agency NASA. • It is named after the astronomerEdwin Hubble and one of NASA's Great Observatories. National College Iasi

  4. Hubble’s launch • Space telescopes in 1923. Hubble was funded in the 1970s, with a proposed launch in 1983. When finally launched in 1990. National College Iasi

  5. Hubble has helped to resolve some long-standing problems in astronomy. While Hubble helped to refine estimates of the age of the universe, it also cast doubt on theories about its future. National College Iasi

  10. HST - five scientific instruments • Wide Field • Planetary • Camera • Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph • High Speed Photometer National College Iasi

  11. The Wide Field and Planetary Camera it was built by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and incorporated a set of 48 filters. National College Iasi

  16. Eventually, Hubble’s time will end because pieces of it will begin to degrade. • When that happens a robotic mission is expected to help de-orbit it. National College Iasi
