Harding • Promises a return to normal; wants to end foreign involvement & domestic turmoil • Coolidge- VP • Ohio Gang- Harding’s friends and supporters that he gave govt. jobs/positions; they were unqualified  corruption • Teapot Dome Scandal- Albert Fall, Senator/Ohio Gang, arrested for scandal involving govt. oil reserves and bribery • Harding has a heart attack and dies

Calvin Coolidge • “Silent Cal”- reputation for honesty; fires Ohio Gang members • Believes best govt. has the least involvement or interference in people’s lives/ nation • Supports business- “the man who builds a factory builds a temple”; he wants to create a govt. that favors business  lead to economic prosperity • Govt. lowers income tax, cuts govt. spending, raises tariffs to protect businesses, overturn child labor laws and laws regulating wages for women

  4. Robert LaFollette- Progressive presidential candidate. • Coolidge sweeps the election. • 2 women win governor’s offices 1st time ever • Nellie Taylor • Miriam Ferguson

  5. Foreign Policy • Harding & Coolidge both favored limited role in world affairs • Wanted world peace but did not want to join League of Nations • Americans ok with isolationism • Harding: Five Power Treaty- limits size of nations’ navies; 1st time world powers agree to disarm • Kellogg-Briand Pact- outlaws war • Coolidge reaches a settlement w/ Mexico ; U.S. withdraws troops from Latin America (Harding)
