  1. Offering the Message Nutrition Education

  2. Nutrition Education: Key to the WIC Program • What is Nutrition Education? • Information, facts • Tips, “how tos” • Anticipatory Guidance • A Heads up on what’s to come • “Drop a Knowledge Bomb” • Leave them with something they: • Didn’t come in with

  3. Key Things to Remember • In order for someone to act they must: • Confident • Capable/Control • Able • Willing • It’s not just what you say…Its how you say it!

  4. In Order To Be Effective • Tailor the message • Pick the best message for the family • Based on your “dig” or your assessment of their: • Needs • Interests • Culture/values/motivations • Don’t let your message add to the stress • Even problem solvers can be sent into traffic

  5. What You Say • Use your wheel!

  6. How You Say It • In the Spirit of PCS: • Make sure you got their need • Reflections and Summaries • Give them control • Ask Permission • Boost confidence • Affirmations • Look, Recognize, Respond

  7. Summaries and reflections

  8. Reflections • Repeat back what mom is saying • This skill: • Let’s mom know you hear her • Helps her feel understood • Helps you as the counselor ensure you’ve identified a motivation or need • Can repeat content or meaning • Meaning is more effective

  9. Reflections • “He’s not sleeping well and you’re very tired.” • “He’s not sleeping so you’re worried that you’re not doing something “right” or that he’s not getting enough.”

  10. Reflect This • “I thought breastfeeding was going to be easier than this. I just didn’t expect it to be this hard. I feel like I have to have her in the perfect position or she just won’t take it. She arches her back and screams.” What am I saying?

  11. Summaries • Is a “check in” moment • Helps you transition to the next step • Makes it easier for you to offer nutrition education • Lists “mini-reflections” of the key points so far

  12. Summary • “So it sounds like he’s been growing well, and he’s healthy, but you’re concerned he’s not getting enough because he’s not sleeping and offer formula just in case.”

  13. Summarize This • You are doing the assessment of a 4 week IPN. Weight gain is on track and there are no C concerns. She tells you that her baby wakes often at night and sometimes is hungry soon (1 hr) after feeding. He will sometimes scream and arch away from the breast but will take a bottle. Because of this mom is concerned he isn’t getting enough. You learn that the mom will offer the breast when the baby cries. There are no other D concerns.”

  14. “What do you think…” Look, Recognize, Respond

  15. Asking for permission

  16. Why? • If no where else…THIS IS THE TIME • Gives the Parent Control • People are more like to listenand act on what you say if you are letting them lead • No one likes being bossed • Can be done in a variety of ways: • Classic • Coming from a place of curiosity • Respect when you’re offering something not requested

  17. Classic • Would it be okay with you? • Can I share? • May I offer? “Would it be okay with you if I offer some information about infant sleep?”

  18. Curious George • “Would you be interested in…” • “How interested would you be in some information…” • “Would you be interested in talking a little bit more about infant sleep and what that means for feeding?”

  19. With All Due Respect… • Great for when you have to offer “corrective information” • Great for when you have to bring up something the parent hasn’t seemed interested in • You can take this or leave this… • This may not work for you… • You know your family best so this may not work, but can I…

  20. With All Due Respect… • “You can take this or leave this, but we’ve learned a lot recently about infant sleep which may make you feel better. Can I share a little more about that?”

  21. Consensus + Permission = Power • To make what you’re about to offer more powerful, tie it to what other moms have said or are doing • Gives you credibility • Gives what you’re saying credibility • Makes mom feel more confident that she’s not alone • Think before you use yourself

  22. Affirmations

  23. Affirmations • Build confidence • Help mom know you’re not there to judge • Must be genuine “Your instincts as a mom are right on and I can tell that you want to make sure your baby gets what he needs.” “You are a good mom. He’s lucky to have a mom that is so responsive!”

  24. Put it Together • What Nutrition Message Would you offer this mom? • How could you offer it?

  25. Scenario You are doing the assessment of a 4 week IPN. There are no other D concerns.

  26. What You Say and How You Say It • “So it sounds like he’s been growing well, and he’s healthy, but you’re concerned he’s not getting enough because he’s not sleeping and offer formula just in case.” • “Well, he’s a lucky guy you’re a good mom who is responsive to his needs!” • “Would it be okay with you if I shared a little information about infant sleep and what other moms have found helpful?”

  27. The Knowledge Bomb • Drop a bomb that is: • Concise – quick to the point • Is factual, clear information • Has 1 – 3 points - MAX

  28. Boom • “…babies this age wake frequently, because they have small tummies and their brains are developing so quickly. Most babies don’t begin sleeping through the night, or a six hour stretch until 6 months old! That also may be why he’s hungry so much. Some moms have found breastfeeding is easier if they offer the breast before baby cries.”

  29. See How it Landed • Check to see the reaction to the “bomb” • “…how do you feel about that?” • “…what do you think?” • “…would that work for you?” This also gives you your:

  30. Your Turn • In your groups read Part C • What is the key message to offer? • How would you offer it? • Write your TGIF (make up the G )

  31. TGIF • T: Fabric • G: Breastfeed More • I: Nurses 9 x per day, 10 oz formula. Mom says baby is hungry all the time. Discussed feeding cues. No other codes. • F: Breastfeeding

  32. TGIF • T: Fabric. Feels worn down by lack of sleep and baby being hungry all the time. • G: Will offer breast at early hunger cues. • I: Baby nurses 9 x per day, takes 10 oz formula.
