Signs of an Acute Injury • Sudden, severe pain • Swelling • Limited Range of Motion • Pressure applied causes pain • Extreme weakness of the structure • Heat due to an increase of blood flow • A bone or joint visible or out of place *Note: these can occur suddenly during any physical activity.
R.I.C.E. Treatment Cont. • R:est is key to prevent further injury. It is also important because your body needs to conserve energy to have time to properly heal. • I:ce is used to limit blood flow, reduce swelling and decrease pain • *REMEMBER: Never leave ice directly on the skin for more than 20mins. This may result in tissue damage.
R.I.C.E. Treatment Cont. • C:ompression aids in the healing process by reducing swelling. • E:levation ensures the blood is circulating correctly so no blood clots form and also helps in reducing swelling.
Tissue Healing Tissue healing goes through 3 stages: • Inflammatory Response • Matrix and Cell Proliferation • Remodeling
Stage 1 Inflammatory Response- Lasts from time of injury to 72 hours • Signs and Symptoms: • Severe Pain • Severe Swelling • Warm to touch • Severe Bruising • Weakness of the structure
Stage 2 Matrix and Cell Proliferation: Lasts from 72 hours to 2-3 weeks • Signs and Symptoms: • Mild/Moderate • Swelling • Bruising • Pain • Weakness of the structure
Stage 3 Remodeling: Lasts from 2-3 weeks until 3-4 months • Signs and Symptoms • Minimum/ No • Swelling • Bruising • Pain • Weakness of the structure
Moral of the story… • Be careful in any physical activity you do. Whether it be just throwing the ball around, going on a jog or playing under the Friday night lights. • See your Athletic Trainer if any injury occurs! • Dobie Athletic Training Room Hours: • Monday-Friday • 6:30am-7:15am • 1st, 4th, 6th, 7th periods • After School until practices/competitions have ceased
