MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATEDEFINED • Motivational Climate – setting up a climate or environment that promotes development of a task or mastery orientation and learning beliefs rather than an ego orientation and capacity beliefs. • For example, a teacher establishes a climate that focus on enhancing learning as more important than getting good grades--challenging students to work hard and learn as much as possible rather than just getting by and/or receiving “A’s.”

  4. “TARGET” CONCEPT TO CLIMATE DEVELOPMENT • TARGET – is a systematic approach to using 6 types of strategies to create a mastery climate. • TARGET -- provides a comprehensive way to create change that will promote mastery, challenge seeking behaviors.

AMES’ INTERVENTION STUDIES • In a 3-year study, elementary school teachers were trained during a week long workshop on how to develop a mastery climate using TARGET principles. • Actual strategies were developed by the teachers based on TARGET principles, their particular curriculum and instructional style.
