  2. YourPurpose • Convinceyourreader to thinklikeyou do! • Convinceyourreader to change hismind or his opinion on an issue. • Convinceyourreader to take action of somekind.

  3. EssayLayout Paragraph 1—Introduction—Makeyour CLAIM. This isyour position/opinion on your issue. Be clear! Paragraph 2—First reason/argument ( I suggeststartingwithyour medium-strengthreason.) Paragraph 3-Second reason/argument (I tell students to sneak in the weakestreasonhere.) Paragraph 4-Third reason/argument (End withyourstrongest argument/reason.) Paragraph 5-Counterargument and rebuttal. Anticipate the otherside’s argument (s) and argue back (yourrebuttal). Doingthiswellmakesyou a stronger persuader! Paragraph 6-Conclusion. Restateyour claim. Summarizeyour arguments/reasons and leaveyourreaderwith a strong final thought!

  4. Introduction Your introduction should end with a clear, strong, and specificthesisstatement! It should state your claim and previewyour arguments. The readershouldbe able to readthis and KNOW exactlywhatyou’llbewriting about!

Introduction • Your introduction should open with a hook to draw in yourreader. -give an overview of your issue -share an anecdote that leads into the topic -startwith a startlingstatement, fact, or statistic -quote an expert on yourtopic -set a scenerelated to yourtopic -startwith a relatedrhetorical question -startwith an unusualdetail

Body Paragraphs • EACH body paragraphshouldbeginwith a well-writtentopic sentence that CLEARLY (and interestingly) states your argument/reason. • Afteryourtopic sentence, youshouldtheninclude 2-3 supportingexamples/detailsthat back up your argument. Be clear and specific. Supportingdetails are very important in persuasion! This isyourevidence! • I suggestthatyoustartwithyour medium-strength argument, then go to yourweakest, and end withyourstrongest. • BETWEEN body paragraphs, be sure to use TRANSITIONS thatconnectyourideastogether!

  7. Types of Support • Personalexperience…tell about a personalexperiencethat supports your argument. • Expert opinions…researchwhat the experts are saying. Can they back you up? • Examples…cite specificexamples of what point you’remaking. • Analogy…compare your situation to anothersimilar situation that supports your argument. • Facts and statistics…research sources thatmightprovidesupporting data. • Reasons…cite specificreasons (logic) for support. • Emotionalappeal…justbecareful not to go overboard on thisstrategy! Be verycareful not to makeempty, unsupported claims!!

  8. Counterargument & RebuttalThis maybelocatedbefore or afteryour body paragraphs. We’ll place ours after. Whenwriting a persuasive essay, itis important thatyoupresent the counterargument. You shouldacknowledgewhat the othersideisthinking and arguing. You shouldthenoffer a rebuttal. This means argue back againsttheirbiggest argument(s). Don’teverjustsay the othersideisdumb, don’t know whatthey’retalking about, are wrong, etc.

  10. Conclusion • Restate the claim presented in yourthesisstatement. • Summarizeyour arguments (points). • End with final thoughts or a call for action. • You might pose a final question. • You could end with an appropriatequotation. • You couldevenmake a prediction.

  11. Practice You willgivensome persuasive papers to read and analyze. You’llbelooking for key parts: claim, arguments, evidence, types of support, counterargument, and rebuttal.
