  1. Persuasive essay writing

  2. I. Introduction • The first sentence: • A “hook”- a quote, question or fact related to the topic that is interesting and grabs the reader’s attention

  3. The next 2-3 sentences: • 1 or 2 sentences that briefly tell about your topic without going into too much detail or giving too much away

  4. The Last Sentence of Your Intro • Thesis Statement • This sentence tells the reader exactly what you think about your topic, and gives 2 specific arguments to support your opinion.

  5. For example: • “The government should not censor music because it goes against freedom of speech, and people who are offended should listen to different music.”

  6. Your thesis statement should be so specific that your 2 arguments given become the topic sentences in your 3rd and 4th body paragraphs.

  7. II. The Rebuttal Paragraph • The rebuttal paragraph is your second paragraph. • It immediately follows the introduction paragraph.

  8. In your rebuttal paragraph, you acknowledge the other side’s opinion. • This makes you sound more knowledgeable about the topic- you have taken the time to learn about what the opposition thinks about the topic.

  9. The first few sentences of your rebuttal tell about the other side’s opinion. • Good wording for these sentences sounds like this: • “There are those that say…” • “Some people believe that…”

  10. In the last sentence of your rebuttal, you shoot down (rebut) the opposition’s argument- and then state why your belief is right.

  11. For example: “While there are many who will argue that censoring music protects children and improves society, these arguments are invalid because music censorship goes against freedom of speech and people who are offended should listen to different music.”

  12. The Third and Fourth Paragraphs • Both body paragraphs follow the same format. • The first sentence: a topic sentence that talks about 1 of the reasons given in your thesis statement. • Make sure that your topic sentence relates to your thesis statement.

  13. Body Paragraphs • The next sentences in your 3rd and 4th body paragraphs defend the argument you are making. • Every sentence in your body paragraph must relate to your thesis statement. • Remember that the purpose of a persuasive essay is to persuade the reader that you are right.

  14. Conclusion • Your conclusion is just a reminder of what your essay was about. • Re-word your introduction. • DO NOT bring up a new point. If it was important, it should have gone into a body paragraph.

  15. Pet Peeves • You MAY NOT say: • “In conclusion…” • “As you can see…” • “In this essay I discussed…”

  16. Tips/ Pointers • No personal pronouns: I, me, we, you, our, etc. • You may only write in the present tense • Spelling counts!!!! • No contractions! “Can’t”, “Don’t” • Use “Can not”, “Do not”
