    1. Staffordshire Learning Platform Pilot Derrick Golland Senior Adviser, e-Learning Manager www.sln.org.uk/elearning

    2. 2 The national context “By 2008 all schools will be able to offer access to e-learning resources both in and out of school. We will encourage all schools, by this date, to make available a personal online space for every pupil” DfES

    3. 3 A working definition “Learning Platform is a generic term to describe a broad range of ICT systems which are used to deliver and support learning. A learning platform usually combines several functions, such as organizing, mapping and delivering curriculum activities and the facility for learners and teachers to have a dialogue about the activity, all via ICT. So, the term learning platform can be applied to a virtual learning environment (VLE) or to the components of a managed learning environment (MLE).” (Becta)

    4. 4 Participants The pilot is limited to 20 schools (15 secondary and 5 primary schools). 15 schools have been offered a reduced cost purchase of the RM Kaleidos VLE product; another 5 will be asked to participate in the pilot that have already purchased and/or implemented learning platform technology, including the Kaleidos product. Early adopter schools that have other learning platform technologies have been asked to contribute to the pilot in sharing their experience.

    6. 6 The Pilot will: Offer flexibility to accommodate evolving school and user requirements, including an analysis of organisational and user need requirements. Provide a modular and flexible technology base so that individual functionality and components can be used. Allow pedagogic diversity to meet learners/schools needs. Enable an analysis of the learning processes to determine the service and functionality requirements; not the technology defining what processes are to be implemented!

    7. 7 The Pilot will: Support adaptabilty – so that learning process can be configured to meet changing operational requirements that reflect changes in new ways of working and provision. Allow schools to make choices from a wide variety of development strategies that enables schools to experiment and develop at their own pace, level and depth. Adopt technical and interoperability specifications and standards. Protect legacy investment in content and resources and pay due regard for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

    8. 8 The Project Board
