Opportunity • Scouting Image • Food drive happens in your community • Demonstrates values of scouting • Shows our kids contributing to society – giving back • A Good Turn • Demonstrates us doing good for others • Shows a little work goes a long way • Cross Sectional Involvement • Roles for all children and adults in group • Provides opportunities for increased interaction • Leadership Opportunities • Within the project, there are various jobs suitable for each level of the program • A good way to get parents involved • Quick return on investment • We delivered to 5000 homes in 3 days • We collected 5250 lbs of food for the hungry • Each child reached out to 100 homes

  3. 52nd Mississauga Experience • Year 1 • Delivered bags and flyers (meeting night) • Knocked on doors to collect donations (Sunday afternoon) • Took a long time 3+ hrs • Yielded limited results for time taken • May have been considered intrusion by some residents • 1,000 homes, 1400 lbs of food

  4. 52nd Mississauga Experience • Year 2 • Delivered bags and flyers (meeting night) • Flyers requested people to leave food outside with flyer attached. • Drove through neighbourhoods and picked up food that was left outside (Sunday aft) • Left a “Thank-you” card where food was donated • 2000 homes, 2500 lbs of food • Missed some donations – received calls

Steps in the Program • Planning Stage • Get buy-in from Group/Sections/Sponsor • Determine scale of operation based on committment • Contact local food bank • Pick up locations, information for flyers (need, logos, etc) • Determine timeframe (Drop off dates/ Pick up date) • Order Bags, Design and print flyers and Thank you cards • Make Thank you cards non-date specific • Determine/assign neighbourhoods to canvas • Send out Media Press Releases (be optimistic) inviting media to cover event (before and during) • Invite dignitaries (Mayor, MP, MPP, Councilor, etc.)

  8. Shows needed items (top) and is big enough to be seen from the street. We ask that this is attached to the donation.

  9. Provides directions, identifies group and sponsor, shows where food is going.

Steps in the Program Preparation • Fold and stuff flyers into bags. • Bundle into 25/50. • Produce route maps for delivery and pick up • Counts of houses on each route are important • Assign routes to sections for delivery • Produce packages for pick up teams/drivers • Thank you cards • Safety/Pick up instructions • Route maps • Buy supplies to feed/thank volunteers • Food (candy/granola bars), Drinks (Juice boxes, Hot Choc, Coffee)

Steps in the Program Flyer/Bag Delivery • On Regular meeting night(s) • Discuss hunger • Discuss safety precautions • Break out into groups of 2-3 kids + adults (maintaining ratio) • Deliver bags with flyers • Regroup and discuss • Ask children questions about the night • Did people ask questions? • Did anyone have any challenges? • Thank them. Remind them to come out for pickup day!

Steps in the Program Food Collection • Gathering People • Gather at central location • Hand out packages to drivers • Maps • Safety and instruction sheets • Emergency Contact number(s) • Divide children and helpers into small groups (mix older and younger children) and ensure ratio is maintained • Short Speech • Thank people, discuss safety, explain what to do • Be enthusiastic and positive • Be prepared for interviews/photos by media • Pick up food • Drivers drive along road with 4-way flashers on • Children spot food drive bags/flyers • Children collect food and bring it to the vehicle • Children leave a “Thank-you” card • Adult or older child can load food into vehicle

Steps in the Program • Regroup at Central Location • Pile food into a single location • Gather everyone behind the food for some photos • Provide hot chocolate/coffee and candy/snack for all helpers • Thank everyone for assisting • Very Short Speech • More interviews/photos • Deliver to fire station/food bank! • Load all the food into a few vehicles and deliver to fire station

  15. Steps in the Program • Feedback/Reporting • The food bank is able to provide us with an estimate of the number of pounds/kilos of food collected • We report back to everyone in group and media outlets involved

Proposal • Do it on the same weekend • Show how a few good deeds adds up to many, many pounds of food for the hungry. • 10 groups * 5,000 lbs = 50,000 lbs • Foodbank shortfall last year was advertised at approx 25,000 lbs before our drive! • 52nd will provide start up package including: • Flyer template • Media press release template • Map maker instruction (Scouts/Venturers/Parent Volunteer) • Thank-you Template • Instruction Sheets/ Safety Tips • Central Media contacts (if desired) • Contact info for food bank • Contact info for paper bags – pricing options • Provincial MPP support • Communications notes (talking to kids about hunger and the event)
