  1. Moving Freshwater(Streams and Rivers)

    DH & J W
  2. Biome Description Typically bodies of water flow in ONE direction Found everywhere (All seven continents!) Have headwaters Travel to mouths Water changes temperature during its journey. (Cooler at source) Trout and salmon common, other fish as well. Clearer, fresher water in streams and rivers.
  3. Food Web
  4. Abiotic Factors Temperature of water indirectly related to oxygen concentration. Low altitudes/elevations- Higher temperature High altitudes/elevations- Lower temperature Light in contact with the stream affects species variation. Sedimentation levels in river’s/stream’s affects water’s quality.
  5. Geographic Location Rivers and streams are on every continent! (Even Antarctica!) Different species live in different biomes depending on their location. Same general food webs/chains.
  6. Unique Animals and Plants Trout are very common in river and streams. Bears eat salmon swimming up stream. Large variety of algae in moving fresh water. Many rodent mammals such as beavers and fisher utilize these rivers and streams.
  7. Vocabulary Terms Biome- A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat. Flora- The plants of a particular region, habitat, or geological period. Abiotic- Physical rather than biological; not derived from living organisms. Fauna- The animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period.
  8. Questions! 1. How many continents can rivers and streams be found in? 3 7 6 0 2. Generally, as altitude rises, water temperature______ _. Rises Falls Stays the same Fluctuates depending on the oxygen levels
