  1. Public Domain/Open Source Software Evaluation Photo Organizer

  2. What is Photo Organizer • Photo Organizer is a Web-based multi-user photo management tool that was designed for professional photographers. • It offers a searchable photo database that supports photo version control, a datebook with client management, photo submission history, EXIF, IPTC, XML, and XMP. • The flexible architecture of Photo Organizer will allow the program to run on a single computer or on a cluster of computers.

  3. Scalable Architecture/Software Components • PostgreSQL - This database is the best and most reliable open source SQL server. Photo Organizer benefits from its transaction support, keeping your data consistent even if the system would fail. • PHP - the Hypertext Preprocessor. • Apache HTTP Server - the number one HTTP server on the Internet. This is the main engine executing the PHP code. • ImageMagick - is a software suite to create, edit, and compose bitmap images. It can read, convert and write images in a variety of formats (over 100) including DPX, EXR, GIF, JPEG, JPEG-2000, PDF, PhotoCD, PNG, Postscript, SVG, and TIFF.

  4. Scalable Architecture/Software Components • Dave Coffin's dcraw image decoder. – an ANSI C program that decodes any raw image from any digital camera on any computer running any operating system. • mail transfer agent - if you wish to use e-mail notifications. • ps2pdf – converts PS (postscript) file formats, to PDF (portable document format) file formats. • gtar - standard GNU tar, usually comes with all major Linux distributions. • unzip - standard GNU unzip.

  5. Photo Organizer Features • Control • Privacy • Openness • Network Accessibility • Scalability

  6. Control • Photo Organizer gives you complete control over your photographs. Your data cannot be held hostage by a unilateral change by another person or company, not even the original software developers.

  7. Privacy • Photo Organizer lets you specify access permissions on a per-folder and per-image basis, so only those who are allowed to see any particular images can do so.

  8. Openness • Photo Organizer uses off-the-shelf Free and Open Source Software, and is itself licensed under the GPLv2. • If the original developers abandon the software, its users will always have the right to continue using it, fix bugs, and add new features themselves. • This openness also ensures that your all-important data can never be held hostage by someone else.

  9. Network Accessibility • Instead of being tied to one computer when managing or accessing your photos, you can do so on any computer with a web browser. • Any changes made are instantly reflected to all other users.

  10. Scalability • Photo Organizer easily handles tens of thousands of photographs, and is limited only by the amount of disk space of its server.

  11. Photo Organizer Tools • Photo Management • Client Management, Shop Module, and Date book • Printing • Search

  12. Photo Management • Each image you upload can be tagged with detailed metadata – Captions, keywords, locations, timestamps, equipment you used and its settings. • Photos are organized in hierarchical folders, but can also be added into multiple albums. • Image files are stored in an image repository with an automatic volume manager which enables splitting up large repositories into smaller chunks that are more easily managed and backed up. • Robust bulk upload features allow you to import hundreds, if not thousands of images in one go, complete with per-image metadata.

  13. Client Management, Shop Module, and Date book • The system has Client Management interface with online client registration. • Online client registration. • Clients registered with you can access your protected photos. • Define formats and availability for each photo. • Submit photos to Clients and track submissions.

  14. Printing • Print color photo brochures in PDF and PS formats. • Print labels with shooting data in PDF and PS formats. • Over 130 predefined label types and 54 paper sizes, with the possibility to add your own custom labels.

  15. Search • Search and display results on three categories: photo, folder and user • The search engine uses stemming to include related variations of your keywords. Stemming works for English only. • Logic operators allow you to formulate sophisticated search queries ( AND, OR, and NOT). • Photo search results can be saved into albums, exported, and printed.
