4. Today�s Focus Treasures Unit 3 Week 1 Day 3 Main Selection: On My Way To School (Unit 3 T.E. pgs. 12/13-28) Before the story: Explain Language & Lesson Objective Introduce vocabulary with a hybrid approach Explain the story comprehension strategy of �Visualization� and provide examples

5. Focus Continued During reading: Reinforce vocabulary and the idea of VISUALIZING to remember events that have transpired Guided quick sketch of events as they occur in the story. Thinking map integration is key here. (Circle map on ELMO, Whiteboard, Chart paper or Interwrite pad) Make use of leveled responses via sentence frames that can be added to your thinking maps for oral response support. (i.e. I see�., I�m picturing in my mind�., I am visualizing��)

Focus Finale After you read: Guided discussion with Structured Student Interaction Support Basic general discussion whole class with responses coming from students using sentence frames A game such as Tic-Tac-Toe group competition requiring students to answer with sentence frame support for team points Review the language & lesson objective and poll for understanding

8. What does it mean to visualize? Synonyms: Imagine Picture or see in your mind Think of a picture or image Dream of

9. Visualize a birthday party What do you see in your mind when you hear the words birthday party?

10. How about a hospital visit What do you imagine when you hear the word hospital?

11. Front Loading Vocabulary Tree (p. 20) Crocodile (p. 26) Pool (p. 26)

12. Tree Definition: A large woody plant with a main trunk. The tree was very tall with many branches and leaves.

13. Pool Definition: A place, usually dug into the ground, that is made for swimming. My friends came over to my house after school to swim in my pool.

14. Crocodile Definition: A large meat eating reptile that lives in fresh water. I saw many sharp teeth when the crocodile opened its mouth.

15. Setting the stage for reading Lesson Objective: Students will understand the meaning of visualization and demonstrate their knowledge by sharing out at appointed times throughout the story. Language Objective: Students will demonstrate mastery of visualization by answering questions related to the topic in complete sentences with appropriate academic language.

16. Give Students A Task Remind students of what it means to visualize as well as the main theme that was introduced by the BIG IDEA at the beginning of the unit. Tell students that they will be reading a funny story. Have them try to capture humorous events as they unfold in the story.

17. Unit 3 week 1: Let�s Laugh Refer to the BIG IDEA let�s laugh Tell students that you will be looking for instances of humor in the story and recording them as you read. Review words such as humor, funny, amuse and ridiculous as was covered in the robust vocabulary

18. Reading the Story Make sure the task of looking for humorous events is clear II. Decide on how you will record student observations: whiteboard, ELMO, chart paper or Interwrite pad What type of thinking map will you use?

21. Checking for Understanding Conduct a teacher led discussion cueing students into the use of the sentence frames Divide the class into two groups and play a comprehension game (Tic Tac Toe)

22. Review Objectives Make the connection between the activity just completed and both the lesson and language objectives Poll students for understanding and check of whether all objectives were met
