  5. discovery-based • enhances a battery of higher order thinking skills • moves learning from knowing to understanding • learners create pragmatic knowledge that is useful to learners' lives and their community

  7. scaffolding is essential so learners can grasp basic facts and skills to carry out rigorous learning • learning is facilitated and guided for learner success
