  2. The Award • Top-rated in the Validation Category • 22.6 Million (including 20% match) • Distributed over 5 years • Pennsylvania is one of 4 states participating • Technical Review

  3. Twenty Percent Match • $3,660,236 • Stone Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Carnegie Corporation, JP Morgan Foundation, JP Morgan Private Investment Bank, The Stuart Foundations.

  4. Grant Activities • RCT (Randomized Control Trial) – schools new to RA • Building Capacity – schools already implementing • Leadership • RCT Schools • Building Capacity Schools • State System of Intermediate Units

  5. District/School Participation • Must have a high need population • Must have a similar high school within the district of close by for comparison • Commit to all four years of the project • Must have 2 - 3 content area teachers in the following disciplines • English Language Arts • Biology • US History

  6. District/School • Treatment/Control • Schools have a 50% chance of being in the treatment group • Professional development will begin summer 2011 for treatment schools • Professional development will begin summer of 2014 for control schools.

  7. Teacher Participation • 9th Grade English Language Arts • 10th Grade Biology • 11th Grade US History • Need two to three teachers from each discipline

  8. The Commitment • Participate in 10 days of discipline specific professional development • 5 days summer 2011 • 2 days during academic year • 3 days summer of 2012 • Actively work to implement Reading Apprenticeship with fidelity • Participate in site visits • Accurately collect data on student performance & teacher implementation

  9. Benefits • Provision of Professional Development & training materials • Stipends to teachers for summer attendance & data collection • Reimbursement for substitutes

  10. Leadership Training • Participants must attend the full 10 day training • Representation from RCT, Building Capacity and PAIU needed • Complete an application • Selected applicants will attend a leadership training to be held 2012
