What is the Teacher Education Council? • The Teacher Education Council is a team of SJCSD instructional personnel who partner as liaisons with the Professional Development Department to: • Provide feedback on professional learning activities • Provide feedback on professional learning protocols • Recommend professional learning activities • Receive and share information regarding professional learning opportunities with their school staffs • Receive and share professional learning resources and best practices • Collaborate on the design and content of District In-service Days

  4. Goals of Professional Learning “The primary purpose of professional learning is to improve educator practice and student results. Continuous improvement of individuals, schools, and school systems depends on high-quality professional learning. Professional learning is the primary vehicle available to schools and school systems to strengthen the performance of the education workforce, and the success of educator’s daily work depends on it. For professional learning to deliver on this promise, its conception and design must be based on research and successful practice.” Standards for Professional Learning, Learning Forward 2011

SJCSD Guidelines for AwardingInservicePoints St. Johns County School District in-service credits will be awarded for participation in professional learning activities aligned with state and district initiatives and goals. These activities include, but are not limited to: • Workshops/Courses • Professional Conferences • Professional Learning Communities • Lesson Study • Peer Coaching/Mentoring These questions should be asked and answered to determine if an activity qualifies as professional learning: • As a result of my active participation in this learning activity, how will my students grow (socially, emotionally, academically, or physically)? Or • As a result of my active participation in this learning activity, how will I provide a safer and healthier environment to ensure the optimal growth of students?

SunGard Directions for creating SunGard Accounts http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/depts/staff/ • Participants must register before the start date of a professional learning activity – preferably at least one week before. Participants must drop courses which they are unable to attend. • All participants must complete a course evaluation to receive in-service credit. *Instructors must complete the ‘assign grades’ step. Completing this step is what gives the participants their in-service points. Please check that you have completed only the attendance and grades. DO NOT check that you are completing the course. If you do, no one will be able to complete the course evaluations. **Contact Tricia Herring with questions.

Draft Protocols for Professional Learners *Professional Learner Expectations • Actively listen and participate. • Hold conversations during processing time or breaks. • Silence or put on vibrate cell phones; quietly leave the meeting/training to take urgent calls. Address emails and calls during breaks. • Be punctual when returning from breaks or lunch. • Leave training/meeting facilities clean. *from the SJCSD Staff Development Council

Professional Development Needs Assessment Survey How do we best determine and address the professional learning of educators? • State/District Initiatives - CCSS, Evaluation Systems, EOCs, Project Based Learning, Integration of Technology, STEM, Character Development . . . . • Data – Student Achievement and Teacher Performance • District Needs Assessment survey – see 2011 Survey • Suggested questions/prompts for 2012 – 2013 survey • Gather informal staff data and provide on the TEC Feedback form

District In-service Days • August 13, 2012 • Use feedback form to describe what worked for your colleagues and what didn’t work • April 1, 2012 • Use the feedback form to provide suggestions for the April 1, 2012 District In-service Day • Suggestions • School centers – conference format with keynote speakers and breakouts • Themes at different locations – ie. High-yield instructional strategies, CCSS for ELA, Technology Integration

  10. Powerful Professional Development • What do you feel is the most powerful, practice-changing professional development at your school? • How might this professional development best be shared district-wide? • Gather informal staff data and provide on the TEC Feedback form

  12. ESOL Endorsement 2012 – 2013 Gifted Endorsement Courses Each course is a blend of face-to-face classes and online coursework. Reminders: · You must hold a Florida teaching certificate and be employed as a teacher in SJCSD to take these courses. ·Courses may be taken in any order. ·ESOL 1-5 are needed to complete the full 300-hour ESOL Endorsement. ·Teachers only needing 60 hours of ESOL should take Methods or Language & Literacy.

  14. Changes to ESOL/ERT The Florida Department of Education has proposed changing the guidelines for Reading Endorsed/Certified teachers pursuing ESOL Endorsement. The proposed changes can be found at http://www.justreadflorida.com/endorsement/. Due to these proposed changes, teachers who are currently Reading Endorsed/Certified who wish to add ESOL Endorsement must complete by June 1, 2013, an ESOL Plan of Study which includes ESOL 2 Language and Literacy, ESOL 3 Methods and a 30-hour ESOL practicum.ESOL 2 Language andESOL 3 Methods must besuccessfully completed before beginning the ESOL practicum. Again, all of the coursework for this ESOL Plan of Study must be completed by June 1, 2013.
