  1. Regional ITU Consultation on Conformance Assessment and Interoperability for the Africa region(Nairobi, Kenya, 30-31 July 2010 ) An independent South African telecoms/ICT view on conformance testing & interoperability Paul Inglesby, Telecoms/ICT Consultant South Africa

  2. Agenda • Introduction to the open standards based layered architecture • Mapping of the conformance testing and interoperability (C&I) requirements and challenges onto the layered architecture • A recommended step-by-step approach

  3. Open standards based layered architecture Applications Layer Hosted Services Network Management and OSS/BSS Services Data Centre Enablers and APIs Support Systems Session Control Layer Intelligence and Control Transport Layer Transport Aggregation Access

  5. Conformance testing and interoperability (C&I) in transport layer • Most expensive layer in man-hours spend (OPEX) for the network operator • Where C&I will have a major impact for network operators, in particular, in the developing countries • A global C&I program will contribute towards minimising the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for the network operator

  10. Conformance testing and interoperability (C&I) in session control layer • Many SDO/Fora C&I activities, which does not assist the network operator • Need to have agreement between the SDO/Fora industries to work towards one globally acceptable C&I program • Certainly will contribute towards more efficient network operator businesses and more cost effective and affordable telecoms/ICT products and services

  13. Conformance testing and interoperability (C&I) in application layer • Open standards, open Application Programming Interfaces (API’s) which can provide affordable telecom/ICT services and in particular for developing countries • A challenge for the C&I program, but certainly viable in a Converged Telco, IT and Web domain society

  17. Conformance testing and interoperability (C&I) in support systems layer • Major cost factor for the network operators from a TCO perspective • A global C&I program that integrates the Telco, IT and Web domains is required • Requirement is for managed end-to-end products and services in a multi-technology, multi-vendor equipment, multi support systems environment

  18. 19. A recommended step-by-step C&I implementation strategy • Step 1: There are many C&I industry role players… utilise what has been developed, do not duplicate, but agree to work together • Step 2: Network operators need to satisfy customer requirements from an end-to-end perspective – adopt and deploy one integrated globally certified C&I process and program
