  1. Waste Management – how do we deal with it all?

  2. Remember one of the laws of ecology – There is no such thing as “away” There is no “away” to throw things to! Before World War II (1930s), conservation was the norm. Twenty years later the “disposable society” was born. How did this happen?

  3. 1955 Cover of Life Magazine The idea of a throwaway society was promoted as “progress”! What did people accept this? Is this mentality still with us? Examples?

  4. Waste – some definitions….how are these different? • Any unwanted material or substance that results from a human activity or process OR • Any substance for which the owner or generator has no further use OR • Resources out of place

  5. Categories of Waste • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)- nonliquid from homes and small businesses • Wastewater- waste carried by water via drains in buildings or through storm drains (streets) • Industrial Solid Waste- waste from production, mining, agriculture • Hazardous Waste- solid or liquid that is toxic, flammable, corrosive or radioactive

  6. Goals of Waste Management • Minimize (REDUCE) the amount we generate • Recover waste materials – find ways to REUSE or RECYCLEThis is called DIVERSION. • Dispose of waste safely and effectively

  7. Why is the order important?

  8. Canada ranks so low in large part due to our very high per capita production of MSW and very low rates of waste diversion. 2001 – University of Victoria study

  9. Brainstorm • How can society minimize the amount of waste produced? Production / IndustryConsumers (you!)

  10. Assignment for tonight • Where does the garbage you put at the curb go? • Where does that recycling you put at the curb go? • Where does that wastewater go when you flush, shower, wash the dishes….? • (Depending where you live, the answer may be different!) • To be handed in tomorrow.
