  3. But there are so many times when I don’t understand what I’m reading!! ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Don’t panic... We’ve come to your rescue... The READINGPROCESSSTEPS are on their way...

  4. The Reading Process Steps 1. PREDICT--read title, look at pictures, read headings, read any questions... Then you can think/ write down: “ I think this will be about…” 2. READ--read your material, write down and look up any unfamiliar words, and reread any confusing parts… 3. RESPOND/REACT--write down your thoughts, feelings, solve the problem, and always recheck your work!!!

  5. Why do I need these steps??? How can they help me??? And why do I need to predict before I begin…that takes way too much time!!! Believe it or not…everyone uses these steps in one way or another in every day life...

  8. After predicting, you are ready to read…or in a basketball player’s case…you are ready to play thegame...

  9. Like a basketball player…if you, READ--looking up unfamiliar words and rereading any confusing parts PREDICT Or warm-up Or play the game You will always get an OUTSTANDING…

  12. WORD PROBLEMS Why do we need to solve them? Let’s See!

  13. Every Day, whether you know it or not, you are faced with word problems. For example; How much money should I bring for lunch? Don’t you have to use math and reading to solve this problem? When you go to the movies at the mall, don’t you have to read and use math to figure out how much money you will need? When you attempt to open your locker each day, don’t you use math and reading to open your lock? You can see that solving word problems is part of your every day life whether you like it or not. So… how can we make solving these word problems easier? Let’s take a look….

  14. One way that we can make solving word problems easier is to use the reading process steps. What the heck are those steps again? I forgot them already! 1. Predict using title, pictures, and headings. 2. Read, reread confusing parts, look up any unfamiliar words. 3. Respond and react by coming up with opinions, feelings and solutions…always check to make sure your solutions are accurate. Now, let’s look at an example!

  15. Word Problems Multi-Step Problems Now on your worksheet, write a prediction that explains what you think this problem will be about using a complete sentence. Make sure to use the title, picture and heading to help you make your prediction.

  16. Predictions Here are some possible predictions you could have made 1. I think this word problem will involve steps. 2. I think this will be a word problem with lot’s of steps. 3. I think this word problem will involve pyramids with lot’s of steps. I also think that picture of the pyramid is really cool!!! Now let’s go to our next step.

  17. Read, Read, Read! Word Problems Multi-Step Problems The Margaretville Basketball League has 8 teams. The teams play the Highmount League 4 Monday games and three Thursday games every month. How many games does the Margaritville League play against the Highmount League in a month? Now read the problem and reread any confusing parts. To look up any unfamiliar words, just click on any of the highlighted words.

  18. Respond and React Word Problems Multi-Step Problems The Margaretville Basketball League has 8 teams. The teams play the Highmount League 4 Monday games and three Thursday games every month. How many games does the Margaritville League play against the Highmount League in a month? Now, decide on a method to solve this problem, then solve the problem. Write your method and show your solution on your worksheet. Then check your answer.
