  1. LCLS II Beamline Separation • Issues and ideas resulting from two parallel beamlines in same tunnel

  2. Topology Tunnel Wall Exit Tunnel Wall HXR Beamline N Wall Aisle Center Aisle SXR Beamline S Wall Aisle Tunnel Wall Exit Tunnel Wall

  3. Issues • Installation and removal of equipment • Personnel access and passage • Fire egress, PPS search, unsafe spaces • Maintenance

  4. Installation • Transport clearance for largest objects in the presence of installed beamlines • X-ray and electron beamlines need clearance • Removable beamline sections may be needed to reach the Center Aisle.

  5. Personnel Access • Needed for inspections, maintenance, tours, PPS search, and to go between the Research Yard to EH2. • Duck-under sections may be needed to reach the Center Aisle • Tour groups may have to duck

  6. Fire Egress • Long tunnel is more hazardous than a normal building. Need safe retreat in either direction. • Fire codes imply stairs or ramps under beamlines,... • ... or instead, possibly, a duck-under plus an “equivalency”

  7. Maintenance • One or two-side access to beamline components • Room to pass by an area where maintenance is being performed.

  8. Design Alternatives • Three aisles: • Narrow center aisle, tight wall aisles • Two aisles: • No center aisle, narrow wall aisles • One aisle: • Vertical separation, large aisle

  9. Three aisle example - CESR

  10. Three Aisle 2.5 m beam separation “grade” Installation C Egress C Personnel B Maintenance C It would get B’s instead of C’s for Installation and Maintenance if 3.0 m separation instead of 2.5 m

  11. Two Aisle Example • LCLS-I Text

  12. Two Aisle Alternative “grade” Installation B Egress A Personnel B Maintenance B

  13. One Aisle Example

  14. One Aisle “grade” Installation B Egress A Personnel A Maintenance B

  15. Next Steps • Keep tunnel width • Explore vertical option some more • Check electron beam separation
