Authorization for 60 days unless extended 30)

Détente with China & Russia • Dr. Henry Kissinger, National Security Advisor • Nixon visits China in 1972, re-establishes diplomatic relations, shakes hands with Mao Zedong • Nixon visits Russia in 1972, makes grain trade deal • Concept of playing USSR & China off against each other. • SALT-agreement to freeze # of long-range nuclear missiles for 5 years

Arab Oil Embargo • US supports Israel in the Middle East (Yom Kippur War of 1973) • OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) declares an oil embargo on the U.S. for 5 months. • Energy crisis, 55 mph speed limit. • Interest in alternate forms of energy • Higher oil prices • Beginning of the end for American gas guzzlers
