  4. Allusions Condoleeza Rice: First female African-American secretary of state, served in the Bush administration. Also the first woman to serve as National Security advisor. She doesn't believe that the governemnt should be as involved in abortion as it is and has even referred to herself as mildly pro-choice. Susana Martinez: Republican, first female governer of Mexico and first female hispanic governer in the United States. Although she made it clear that she did not want to run, she was considered for a republican vice presidential candidate for the 2012 election. She is also pro-life  Kelly Ayotte: Republican and pro-life but does believe that abortion should be permitted in cases of rape, incest, or if the life of the mother is at stake.

  5. Persona Female Republican senator from Maine “Olympia J. Snowe is a Republican senator from Maine. She is retiring in January after 18 years in the Senate.” Aware of political happenings well-educated. Use of elevated vocabulary and rhetorical   devices.

  6. Audience Republican Party “At the convention, Romney must work to overcome what others in our party have done to undermine our standing with women, and he must restore the image of who we are as Republicans.” Voters (Primarily women)            "He has proved time and time again that he is the            right choice for the job when it comes to a turn            around- and that is precisely what our party and our            nation require."

  7. Purpose Main purpose of this passage is to assert her opinions about Republicans and Akins. Underlying purposes to reconcile the differences in the Republican party  and repair the relationship between the party and voters To prevail in her opinions of what should be done by the Republican Party

  8. Purpose “First and foremost, Romney should vigorously, not timidly, disassociate himself from the extremes within our party by reiterating to the national audience that the overly rigid language on abortion in the GOP platform … does not represent his view, nor has it been his position.” "Will we rebuild our relationship with women, thereby placing us on the road to success in November, or will we continue to isolate them and certainly lose this election?"

  9. Argument    Not all Republicans are like Akin and the Republican party is not entirely filled with radicals or anti-feminists. •  She incorporates examples from two former Republican presidents that have done positive things for females (Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush) in order to have Romney win the popular vote. •  "The point is, past Republican presidents have heeded the voices of our nation's women and acted accordingly, with lasting effects."

  10. Tone and Diction • Straightforward  • Urgent & Admonishing • “He must demonstrate… He must speak concisely and directly… Indeed, given the recent controversies, he must reach out…” • “Will we rebuild our relationship with women, thereby placing us on the road to success in November, or will we continue to isolate them and certainly lose this election?”

  11. Syntax and Rhetorical Devices Rhetorical Question “Will we rebuild…?” Statement in the form of a question. Causes an insisting or urgent tone. It makes the reader think. Implicit way of expressing her opinion Apposition “In the GOP platform – which includes no explicit exceptions for cases of rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother- does not represent his view, nor has it been his position.” Further explanation, clearing unknown topics. Personification It is unfortunate that the stunningly insensitive statement about rape made last weekend by Rep. Todd Akin is casting a shadow…” Exaggeration to provide emphasis.
