Purpose of NSP • Help students build a bridge to adulthood by structuring coursework and electives to stress the relevance of what is being learned to foster adult success • Enable students to make informed choices that align their studies with their interests to target relevance that can lead to such success

  3. Statute: 22-13-1-1 NMSA 1978 • “A local school board must ensure that each high school student has the opportunity to develop a Next Step Plan based on……college and workplace readiness assessments…… and is reasonably informed about course options, alternative opportunities….that lead to different post high school options.” • PED accountability: promulgate rule, monitor compliance and evaluate success of NSP

Draft Rule • Part of Standards for Excellence • Definitions: Advisor, Interim Next Step Plan, Final Next Step Plan, Transition Plan • Who does which plan and when • On track toward graduation requirements, yearly review, signed by all, filed with principal • “Secondary schools shall provide information on the Next Step Plan as requested by the Department.”

New Draft Templatefor9th Grade Cohort 2009-2010 • Incorporates new graduation requirements and assessments – Senate Bill 561 • Being field tested in 4 schools ( Eldorado HS, Texico HS, Early College Academy, SantaFe HS ) • Template and Instructions for Form Completion found at www.ped.state.nm.us - Directory, “H” for Humanities Bureau, NSP

  6. Update on NSP • Survey Monkey findings on NSP understanding & implementation in school districts • E-school pilot in web platform for professional development • Capture best practices at NM schools on film • text & play-by-play content • narrative on process,interviews

  7. 3 Rs & Systems inNext Step Planning • Harp on rigor and relevance—AP, Dual Credit, Career Clusters, Distance Learning • Develop relationship with the student • Have system and processes in place for teacher advisement
