Historical Background 1900-1920 England France United States • From 1900 to just before WWI, a political system emerged that permitted a high degree of individual freedom • Paris was brimming with authors, musicians, scientists, and artists during this time. • “the age of optimism” • Forty percent of Americans now lived in urban areas • The Wright brothers made the first successful flight in 1903 • A twelve minute movie, The Great Train Robbery, was released • Edward VII became King in 1901 • England was involved in the Boer War in South Africa until 1902 • Edward brought to the throne an emphasis on social life and fashion The Edwardian Period and WWI: 1900-1920
