  3. An Equation is not a Function if… • the “y” variable is raised to an EVEN power; • x = any number; x = 5 and x = -9 – these are vertical lines.

  4. An Equation is NOT linear if… • any two variables are being multiplied together, ex. “xy” Or… • there is a power on any variable greater than 1, ex. “x2” & “y5” Or… • there is a variable in the denominator, ex.

  17. Recursive Formula • Consider the following sequence: 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, . . . • What is the common difference (d)? 4 • Use the recursive formula to find the next term of a sequence.

  18. Recursive Formula tn = tn-1 + d; where n is the term number & d is the common difference. Find the next term of the sequence. Given: t1 = 20 & d = 4 t2 = t2-1 + 4 t2 = t1 + 4 t2 = 20 + 4 t2 = 24

  19. Recursive Formula YOU TRY! Find the next term of the sequence. Given: t1 = 56 & d = -8 t2 = t2-1 + (-8) t2 = t1 + (-8) t2 = 56 + (-8) t2 = 48
