  3. Question for the discussion: • What’s a debate? • Have you ever taken part in the debate? • Who takes part in the debate? • Why do we have debates? • What happens in the debate? • Where do we sit in the debate?

  4. Rules for the Debate: • Be polite. • Don’t interrupt when others speak. • Respect other’s people opinion. • Keep the time limit. • Find good arguments.

  5. How to start • Introduce the topic. • Split the class into two groups. (A,B) • Present a chairperson and explain his role. • Help the students with handouts. • Remind the students about behavior.

  6. Idioms for Debate and about it • “Take the chair” – if you become a chairman of the debate; • “Take the floor” – Start talking or giving a speech; • “Take the rough with the smooth” – if you have to accept the disadvantages as well as the advantages.

  7. A C T I V I T Y • Arrange classroom for a debate. • Ask a chairperson to begin. • The debates of FOR and AGAINST teams. • The chairperson organizes the vote. The teacher observes only, not taking any part in the debate.

  8. Debate as a favorite activity • “I liked debate the best. It was the first time I told about my opinion. “ • “Debate is the best cause I could work with classmates, that make me proud of myself.” • “It encourages all the students to participate in the event.”

  9. How to Debate • Affirmative and negative teams by turns 1) State the first argument. 2) State the second argument. 3) Question preview. Ask one question to both teams. 4) Closing statement. Each team presents closing statement. 5) Voting for the statement.

  10. Education: Home or Abroad 1.What are the goals of the exchange programs for students? 2. What does a person need in order to be a successful candidate? 3.What problems do you think students might come across? 4.Why do the students remember their experience for ever? Work out three dos and three don’ts for studying abroad.

Conclusion • While debate the students practice in listening, speaking, reading, writing skills in combination with critical thinking things. • A debate enhances the abilities to formulate and deliver thoughts in a clear, organized manner. • It focuses on promoting communicative interactions, respect and open-mindedness.
