The Body’s Largest Organ • Skin Structures • Two layers of tissues • Epidermis – surface layer of skin • Melanin – pigment that gives skin color • More melanin means darker skin • Little melanin means you burn easier and may develop skin cancer more easily • Dermis – layer of tissue under the epidermis • Holds blood vessels, nerves, oil and sweat glands

Functions of the skin • Protective covering – prevents physical and chemical injury; prevents disease • Sensory organ – relay information about temperature, pressure, and pain • Forms vitamin D – absorbs calcium • Heat and Waste Exchange • Sweat glands help to regulate temperature • Sweat glands release water, salt, and a protein product called urea • Injury to the Skin • When broken disease-causing organisms can enter the body, possibly causing infection Pg. 457 1-4
