  2. Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • Look at the TV, what are these two disagreeing about? • They each have their own point of view, or perspective, on the subject of who came first. What does it mean to have a different point of view or perspective?

Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • Last time, you were challenged as a group to complete the Create-a-Story activity. • What did you have to do to work together successfully in your groups? • Knowing how to disagree respectfully in such situations is an essential social skill.

  4. Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • Let’s watch a scene of two students trying to work together on a history project. See if you can determine what’s going wrong. • Notice the characters • Body language • Facial expression • Actual words • Tone of voice • Actions

  5. Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • One-minute partner exchange • What did you see happening? • What did you hear? • Describe what the characters were doing

Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • When you used these clues to tell how the students in the video were feeling, you were using your empathy skills – the same skills you were using in the Create-a-Story • What are the 3 components to empathy? • Identify • Understand • Respond

Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • What could the students in the video have done differently? • Now let’s watch a scene of another 2 students who are also doing a history project. They disagree about what topic they should do too, but are able to communicate effectively with each other. Again notice how they interact with each other. See if they use any of the suggestions from out list.

  8. Empathy and Communication: Disagreeing Respectfully • How are the students feeling this time? • What are some of the things they did that made a difference? • What did the girl do to stay calm? • When someone actively listens to you, you feel respected and that your ideas have value
