Higher and Standard Level • Students will select 3 SL and 3HL IB courses • The selection will be for both junior and senior year courses. • Once a student begins an SL or HL version of a course, they may not be able to change their level
Group One – Studies in Language and Literature (English) • All students will take HL • Junior Year: AP English Language • Senior Year: AP English Literature
Group Two– Language Acquisition(French or Spanish) • All students will take SL • Junior Year: Spanish IV or French IV • Senior Year: Spanish V or French V (will sit for AP exam)
Group Three– Individuals and Societies • Students may choose HL or SL • HL Option: • Junior Year: AP US History • Senior Year: History of the Americas • SL Option: • Junior Year: AP US History • Senior Year: Contemporary History • Main Difference Between the Two Levels: • Assessment for HL includes one additional paper
Group Four– Experimental Sciences • Students may choose SL or HL • Students who select HL Physics must take Math HL • Students may choose Biology, Chemistry, or Physics • HL and SL Option: • Junior Year: Biology II, Chemistry II, or Physics II • Senior Year: Biology III, Chemistry III, or Physics III (will sit for AP Exam) • Main Difference Between the Two Levels: • More topics are covered in more depth • Depth (HL) vs. Breadth (SL)
Group Five– Mathematics • Students may choose Math HL, Math SL, or Math Studies SL • Math HL Option: • Junior Year: AP Calculus AB • Senior Year: AP Calculus BC • Math SL Option: • Junior Year: Pre-Calculus • Senior Year: AP Calculus AB • Math Studies SL Option: • Junior Year: Math Analysis • Senior Year: Statistics and Introduction to Calculus
Group Five– Mathematics • Math HL • Very challenging math concepts • Designed for a student with a HIGH level of math talent and interest • Good course selection for future engineers • Recommendation is Test Average > 97% • Math SL • Broadest spectrum of content • Good course selection for future engineering students or business students • Recommendation is Test Average > 90% , < 97% • Math Studies • For the liberal arts student or students who are not strong in math. • It is for the student who will be taking the minimum number of math courses required. • Recommendation is Test Average < 90%
Group Five– Mathematics • Selection of Group Five subjects will be based on: • Prior Math Preparation • Grades 9 and 10 Math Achievement • Standardized Test Scores • Teacher Recommendation
What If We Disagree With The Math Recommendation? • Speak to the teacher • Re-evaluate after semester exams • If necessary, re-evaluate after second semester
Group Six – The Arts (Electives) • Visual Arts • Economics • Psychology • Second Science
Group Six – Visual Arts • Students may take HL or SL • Visual Arts includes both research and studio work • Students should be self-motivated and willing to progress art technique • Main difference between HL and SL: • HL requires more studio work • The HL exam is more extensive
Group Six – Economics • This course is only available as an HL course • Will include concepts in Micro and Macro economics allowing students to sit for both AP exams
Group Six – Psychology • Students may take this course as an HL or SL • A study of human behavior and experience with an emphasis on diversity. • Main difference between HL and SL: • HL includes additional topics • The HL external assessment includes one additional paper
Group Six – Second Science • Students may take an additional science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) • Students may NOT take two HL sciences
Traditional Electives • Three options: • No electives (full JA every day first semester, partial JA every day second semester) • One elective (partial JA first semester, no JA second semester) • One full year elective and One Semester Elective (no JA all year)
Core Requirements • Extended Essay • One year process (series of deadlines) • Coordinated through TOK class • Due at the beginning of your senior year • CAS • 150 hours to be completed by spring of senior year • CAS Project • Theory of Knowledge • All students will take this course during their junior and senior year
