  1. Monday 9/27/2010Do Now Staple the Scientific Instruments Worksheet that Ms. Chan just returned into your notebook. What is the objective of today’s class? The TV weather forecaster says that it will be between 40 and 50 degrees today. The actual reading turns out to be 43. Was the forecaster accurate or precise? Explain.

  2. Class Checklist • No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-taking) and during closing. • Every student was on time • Ms. Chan did not ask any student to put away their electronics (cellphones/IPODS) • No curse words were used inside this room. • Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice. • By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it. • All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan) • Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class. • Every student completed ALL of the class work for the day. • No student had his/her head down during class. • EVERY student turned in the homework ON-TIME. • It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).

Was the forecaster accurate or precise? Explain. A: Precise, but not very accurate. - 39.14F is not close to the true value. - The predicted temp had 2 values after the decimal. So did the real temp.

  4. Announcements • Your first quiz will be this Friday. It will be open notes. • Remember that when we take notes, you are only writing down what is BOLDED and UNDERLINED.

  5. Absences • You have a “MISSING” in my grade book when you aren’t in class. • Show me a note for why you were absent and I will either: • Change the MISSING to EXCUSED if it’s a Do Now or Exit Slip. • Allow you to make up the assignment for full credit.

  8. Review powers of 10: • 103 = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000 • 102 = ? • 10 1 = ? • 10-1 = 1/10 = 0.1 • 10-2 = ? • 10-3 = ?

  9. Example: Write the Distance From the Sun to the Earth in scientific notation. 93,000,000 miles

  10. Step 1 • Move decimal left • Leave only one number in front of decimal 93,000,000 = 9.3000000

  11. Step 2 • Write number without zeros 93,000,000 = 9.3

  12. 7 93,000,000 = 9.3 x 10 Step 3 • Count how many places you moved decimal • Make that your power of ten

  13. The power of ten is 7 because the decimal moved 7 places. The exponent is positive because 93,000,000 is greater than 1. 7 93,000,000 = 9.3 x 10
