  1. Conclusions from this workshop No complete account by any means ;-) EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  2. Campus issues • Bottlenecks still exist, but there have been improvements since SERENATE • ICT/Network strategies must be aligned with overall institutional strategies • NRENs should engage in closer collaboration with campus ICT staff – GigaCampus in Norway is inspiring, however there is no ”One size fits all” EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  3. Digital Divide (DD) issues • DD not the same as geographic issues • Definition of NREN-DD needed • DD to be measured over time – who should take responsability? EC, TERENA? • Status of the market – monopoly issues • User demand vs access speed • NRENs capability to ”sell” their role – need for clear ”business case” /strategy EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  4. Technical issues • Making AAI work – effective federations and confederations • E2e-tuning – understanding advanced apllications & making them work properly • Integration of the Control plane and middleware • Network management • Effective dissemination of technical knowledge, reaching the campus users EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  5. Economic issues • Interest in a benchmarking exercise on fibre availability and pricing • Need for an economic study into investment model vs current model • Look at the sources of network funding • P2P services have been added to the IP subscription as a marginal cost – new model may be needed as things develop EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  6. Economic issues continued • Role of CBF as potential to bridge DD • Economies of scale at the ”centre” only (Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, London)? • Cost-effective access to DF as a criterion? EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  7. Researchers requirements • Last mile is the bottleneck • Need to hear more from social sciences, arts & humanities • Free global access, reliable, secure • Uniform quality standards in computing environments • Radio-astronomy and other ”big” areas ask for one-stop-shopping EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  8. Researchers requirements ctd • Virtual research and collaboration: SWOT analysis seems to indicate that the threats are to some extent of technological nature • How to measure success and RoI – publications per ICT investment ;-)? • Are the high-end users really there today, or are we still waiting for the real high-end usage to begin? EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  9. Other users? • The rationale for reaching out to other groups should be clear • Groups identified: schools, libraries, arts and humanities, health sector • Schools are not really a ”different” sector, but part of the educational system, so including them is just getting to the students a little earlier • Important to keep the close contact to R&E EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  10. Organisational & governance issues • Not discussed as a separate topic, but did pop up in some other discussions, eg • Is it possible to achieve a model for ”one-stop-shopping” across country boundaries? • Cost models for the future – who should do a study on this? • NRENs have to consider future strategies EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  11. Future NREN strategies • Important to maintain the close ties with the research and education institutions • The role as ”broker” for R&E is important also in the future • Innovation is crucial – this is what makes NRENs so special, and interesting for both vendors and R&E institutions • In tranquillo mors, in fluctu vita EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  12. EARNEST and e-IRG • EARNEST: a project for investigating the next generation research networks • E-IRG: an advisory body, developing a roadmap for e-infrastructures in FP7 and beyond • EARNEST + E-IRG: possibilities combind with desires, and how this may lead to realities EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  13. Many open questions • Where are the high-end users really heading? • Technological development is fast and in some respects diverse, need to interact more with industry and collaborate internationally even more intensely • Find national models for further collaboration between NRENs and campus ICT staff EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24

  14. The road ahead • The study areas got quite a bit of input, thank you everyone! • If you have more input to the different areas, please contact the study area leaders (names are already on the TERENA website) • Thank you for your participation, we hope to see you again for further activities EARNEST initial workshop Berlin May 23-24
