  2. Who was Nicholas? Nicholas II (Николай II), was the last Emperor of Russia, Grand Duke of Finland, and titular King of Poland. His official short title was Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias.

  3. Who continued… • Nicholas had three younger brothers Alexander, George, Michael and two younger sisters Xenia and Olga. • Nicholas became engaged to Alix of Hesse in April 1894. Alix was hesitant to accept the engagement due to the requirement that she convert from Lutherism to Russian Orthodoxy. • Nicholas took the throne on 1 November 1894.

Stepping up to the Throne • Nicholas took the throne on 1 November 1894 at the age of 26. • Shortly after he came to the throne, a deputation of peasants and workers from various towns' local assemblies came to the Winter Palace proposing court reforms, such as the adoption of a constitutional monarchy, and reform that would improve the political and social life of the peasantry.
