  1. UNIT THREE - ISU Climate Change ISU & Chapter 7

  2. Concepts you should know from Grade 9 geography!!!! Chapter 13 & 37 Chapter 13 Climate Summary • SIX Factors that Affect Climate: L  O  W  E  R  N • Latitude – light spreads @ poles • Ocean Currents – transfer heat • Winds & Air Masses – prevailing wind • Elevation (Altitude) – air rises & cools • Relief [Orographic Rain] – leeward … • Near Water – moderating effect … • Canada’s Eight Climate Regions – know basic characteristics • Climate Graphs – able to read and create own climate graph from table of data of temp & ppt

  3. Chapter 37 Global Climate Change Summary • Climate has varied – warmer & cooler times in the past • Greenhouse Effect – know & can draw diagram to illustrate GHE • Green House Gases – CO2 , CH4 , NOx halocarbons , O3 , H2O(g) • All have natural sources except halocarbons • Carbon cycle, carbon sink, carbon sources, carbon fixation • Sources: • Human population increase(+), • lifestyle & affluence (+), • burning fossil fuels (+), • deforestation

  4. Chapter 37 Global Climate Change Summary • IMPACTS • Melting Poles – inc+ sea level • More flooding & droughts • Change in global forest distribution • Receding Glaciers, dec- river flows • Change in global farming regions • Climate change refugees • REDUCING GLOBAL WARMING • Minimize release of fixed carbon • Protect & expand carbon sinks • Kyoto Protocol • Ecological Footprint • One tonne challenge Hill, Murat, Shipowick, Syed

  5. ISU-Independent Study Unit This Unit Three ISU consists of: • Reading the Textbook – Chapter 7, 8 & 9 • Filling in the worksheets for Chapter 7, 8 & 9 • Completing the Required Readings for each Chapter from Syed’s Grade 10 My Class • Completing the Required Questions from the textbook for each chapter • Completing a Test for each chapter & • Making a Concept Map for each Chapter: 7, 8, 9

  6. Big Ideas • People have the responsibility to assess their impact on climate change and to identify effective courses of action to reduce this impact. • Earth's climate is dynamic and is the result of interacting systems and processes. • Global climate change is influenced by both natural and human factors, • Climate change affects living things and natural systems in a variety of ways.

  7. Unit Three Chapter 7 • Earth Climate System Chapter 8 • Dynamics of Climate Change Chapter 9 • Addressing Climate Change

  8. Polar bears drowning in an Alaskan sea because the ice packs are melting—it’s the iconic image of the global warming debate.
