Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Sample Collection Interim Study Justin Roach, DVM Rod Hall, DVM Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food & Forestry Animal Industry Services October 18, 2012
Disease Description • Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy of cervidae species • Transmission routes from multiple bodily fluids • Long incubation periods • Clinical Signs: Progressive weight loss, neurological abnormalities, behavorial changes, excessive drinking & urination, profuse salivation • Invariably fatal
Chronic Wasting Disease Herd Certification Program • Voluntary Program • Participation is Free of Charge • Required by Federal Code to participate in interstate commerce • Participants must have all deaths over 12 months of age sampled and tested for CWD • In Oklahoma sampling can only be performed by accredited veterinarians • Federal code allows states to determine who is eligible to perform sampling
CWD Diagnostics • No antemortem tests available • Immunohistochemistry of obex and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes • Obex is the best sample for clinical animals • MRPLNs are more critical in pre-clinical diagnosis
FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM • Our job is to protect the livestock and public of Oklahoma and assist our livestock producers to be as successful as possible
FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM • Federal regulations were suspended in 2006 • For the past 6 years ODAFF has set regulations based on the general guidance of the suspended Federal rules
FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM • We have tried to help our producers while maintaining standards that enable our producers to sell cervids to other states • New Federal rule went into effect 8/7/2012
FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM • Federal oversight of the program will be much more strict now • Oklahoma will be in provisional status for the first year of the review process • If Oklahoma does not achieve and maintain Consistent State Status our producers will not be able to sell deer to other states
FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM • The expertise required to collect Medial Retropharyngeal Lymph Nodes is greater than just collecting the brain stem • Any test eligible animals not sampled properly may require 2 animals to be sampled in the next year • We have required Accredited veterinarians to take these samples
FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM • Accredited veterinarians have special training to represent ODAFF and USDA in regulatory programs • They have helped us eradicate brucellosis, hog cholera, foot and mouth disease, and others • If producers are legally approved to take samples they must be approved by ODAFF by demonstrating sampling competancy
