Key Concepts: 1960’s and 70’s Film and Video • Film and Video of the 60’s and 70’s reflected and contributed to the stylistic and methodological trends of the same period, including Conceptual Art, Performance Art, Minimalism, and Pop Art. • Early film/video art was spurred by the invention of the Sony Portapak video camera in 1965, which made video equipment accessible to the non-technically trained user. • The content of most early film/video art was Conceptual and anti-conformist, like many works of art from the era across all media. It often focused on critiquing TV as an apparatus of state control, a commercially driven force that reinforces gender, class and racial stereotypes. • Early film and video art is also associated with Conceptual Art’s platform of “the dematerialization of the art object” in that it explored the necessity of the art object itself, challenged the gallery system of distribution and private ownership and also museums’ traditional approaches to collecting and preserving works of art. • Today: Film and video have emerged from marginal activities to become the most influential media in contemporary art and have attracted the interest of artists and viewers internationally. Film and video have been conflated in the art world context simply into a culture of the moving image and can be presented in an array of formats that often allow for wholisticand immersive experiences for the viewers.
