  2. What is the National Network of Refuges? The Network is a NGO initiated in 1999 with the aim of bringing together mexican refuges offering security, protection and specialized care for women and their children who live at risk of gender-based violence as well as victims of trafficking.

  3. What is the National Network of Refuges? It joins all private and public refuges in Mexico. There are 74 refuges throughout the National territory which give protection to more than 3,200 women and children at the same moment. In 2008 we protected 15,000 people.

  4. WHAT IS A REFUGE IN MEXICO? A safe and secret place where women and their children go when they are at risk. A refuge designs a specialized intervention for each family according to their needs and respecting women decisions. Measure the level of physical and emotional damages. Provide attention required immediately avoid a bigger crime, homicide, suicide or disability caused by gender based abuse.

  5. WHAT IS A REFUGE IN MEXICO? Provide counselling, legal advice, and access to justice. Increase awareness in women’s rights under a gender equity perspective. Interrupt and break the domestic abuse cycle. Give attention to children victims or witnesses of abuse. Contribute to create better public policies to provide more and better services for victims of GBV.

  6. SERVICES PROVIDED BY REFUGES IN MEXICO Crisis intervention Safety place and accommodation (three months average). Psychological and legal advice Concealing Training in different subjects to find a job. Empowerment and self steam workshops. Health and infirmary services Referrals to refuges in other cities. Meals and clean clothes Games and special activities for abused children and witnesses.

  9. GOALS OF THE NATIONAL NETWORK To strength and support the work of every refuge in Mexico. To promote quality standards in services provided by refuges. To contribute to reduce the consequences of GBV in women and their children. To promote public policies with equity and gender perspective. To reduce domestic abuse rates and homicides.

  10. HOW DOES THE NETWORK WORK? We have developed the National Model to Provide Attention, Protection and Support to women and children victims GBV. We have multi-agency model for referrals and protocols among the refuges and public institutions for cases which face extreme risk to erase any trace of persecute families. We set up National Meetings with lectures, seminars and workshops to up date our skills and knowledge. We usually share experiences and systematize our best practices.

  32. 2nd INTER AMERICAN MEETING OF SHELTERS • GOALS: • To exchange models, good practices, experiences and successful public policies. • To create regional mechanisms for referrals and a strong networking of leaders’ of shelters in countries where the rule of law is lacked and public policies to tackle GBV are weak. • To create better mechanisms to protect women and shelters´ leaders when organized crime and weapons trafficking have increased the risk they face everyday. • To strengthen rule of law in our countries and civil society movement looking for better strategies with our governments. • To consolidate the Inter-American Network of Shelters. www.rednacionalderefugios.org.mx

  33. 2nd INTER AMERICAN MEETING OF SHELTERS WORKING GROUP TO FOLLOW UP GOALS: It is formed by representatives of 17 countries. We lunched a Working Group Meeting in Guatemala in August 2010. The 3rd Inter-American Meeting will take place in August in Antigua City, Guatemala. We agreed to involve more organizations and ountries We developed a protocol for international referrals for migrant women or extrangers. We developed a communitation protocol for the Network We built the Governance Model of the Network dividing the American continent in five regions. www.rednacionalderefugios.org.mx
