  9. School Attendance • Students required to attend school regularly. • High attendance rate = higher achievement • Parents must communicate with school by calling the attendance hotline within 24 hours of an absence. • Extended absences should also be communicated with guidance counselor or administrator.

  10. General Attendance Information • Habitual Truant: A child who is absent for 5 consecutive days, or 7 days in one month, or 12 days in a school year without a legitimate excuse. • Chronic Truant: Achild who is absent for 7 consecutive days, 10 in a month or 15 in a year without a legitimate excuse. • BEREA HIGH SCHOOL HOLDS CHILDREN AND PARENTS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ATTENDANCE!

  11. Lines of Communication • Students or parents with questions or concerns are encouraged to utilize the following lines of communication: Classroom Teacher Guidance Counselor Grade Level Principal Building Principal

Dress Code Highlights • Dress for success! • Attire should be appropriate and not cause a disruption to the learning environment. • Specific guidelines can be found in the student handbook. • Staff members may refer particular student cases to SMR (Student Management Room)or the grade level administrator.

  13. Electronic Devices • During the regular school day students are not permitted to use or have visible any electronic communication devices unless specifically authorized for an educational or instructional purpose with teacher permission. • Violation of this policy may result in the device being confiscated.

  14. Lockers • Lockers are the property of the Berea City Schools and are subject to searches if the administration or police have probable cause. • Lockers are assigned to each student. • Students are responsible for their school materials and personal property, thus lockers should be kept locked at all times. • Sharing of lockers and combinations is not advised. • Inoperable lockers should be reported to the main office this evening.

  15. Supply Lists • Supplies will be determined by individual teacher and will be communicated on first day of school. • On the first day students should bring general school supplies: folders, paper and pen/pencil, notebook etc…

  16. Berea PoliceSchool Resource Officer Program • Agreement between the City of Berea and the Berea City School District. • Based on input from the City of Berea, school administration, faculty and students. • Goals Include: • Education • Crime Prevention • General Law Enforcement

  17. Primary Function of SRO • Provide safe and secure school environment. • Serve as an educational resource • Prevent and reduce criminal acts. • Serve as a liaison between the school and the Berea Police Department.

Freshman Seminars • The Freshman Seminars are designed to help students make a smooth transition to Berea High School. • Students will be exposed to study skills, decision making skills, dealing with peer pressure, high school grading policies, final exams, how to read a transcript, etc… • Seminars will be held periodically during SIP starting in September.

  19. Class of 2014 and Beyond • Students will no longer be recognized using the class rank system, therefore there will be NO Valedictorian or Salutatorian identified. • Students will be recognized for their overall GPA as the following: Cum Laude (“with honors”) 3.500 to 3.849 Magna Cum Laude (“with great honor”) 3.850 to 4.249 Summa Cum Laude (“with highest honor”) 4.250 or higher

  20. Schedule Changes Reasons for making a schedule change: • Error in course placement • Appropriate special needs placement • Computer error on schedule Reasons NOT to change schedule: • Lunch • Electives • Teacher • Study Hall

Schedule Changes • Last day for 1st semester schedule changes is Friday, August 17, 2012. • If you have any questions regarding your student’s schedule, please contact your student’s guidance counselor by phone or e-mail. • No schedule changes will be made after Friday, August 17th. • Changes for second semester must be completed before second semester begins in January 2013.

  22. Co-Curricular Activities • Become an active member of the community and Berea High School. • Wide variety of clubs, activities and athletic teams listed on our website. • Club meeting dates are communicated on the morning announcements.

  23. Graduation Requirement • The graduation requirement for Berea High School is a minimum of 22 credits.

  24. What is a Credit? • Credit is earned when a student passes a class. • Most semester classes are worth .5 credit. These classes meet half of the school year (1 semester). • A class that meets all year long is worth .5 credit each semester for a total of 1 credit. • An exception is Physical Education classes which earn .25 credits.

  25. What is a transcript? • A transcript is the permanent record of a students’ academic history at BHS. • A transcript reflects semester grades, credits, attendance and test scores. • A transcript is an important part of the college admission process. • The semester grades that you will receive in January will be the first grades placed on the transcript.

Athletic Eligibility • If you are an athlete, to be eligible to participate you must have a GPA of 1.5 or higher and have earned at least 2.5 credits from the preceding grading period. • Incoming Freshman must have passed 75% of their classes from 8th grade year in the 4th quarter. • Please direct any athletic questions throughout the year to Mr. Cistolo in the Athletic Department: (216) 898-8902

Athletic Eligibility- Division I • Students who are aiming to compete at a Division I College/University must graduate with the following accomplishments: • 4 Years of English • 3 Years of Math (Algebra I or higher) • 2 Years of Natural or Physical Science (including a lab science) • 1 Extra Year of English, Math, OR Science • 2 Years of Social Science • 4 Years of Extra Core Courses (from any category above, or foreign language) • Earn a combined SAT or ACT score that matches your core course GPA

Athletic Eligibility – Division II • Students who are aiming to compete at a Division II College/University must graduate with the following accomplishments: • 3 Years of English • 2 Years of Math (Algebra I or higher) • 2 Years of Natural or Physical Science (including a lab) • 3 Extra Years of English, Math, OR Science • 2 Years of Social Science • 4 Years of Extra Core Courses (from any category above, or foreign language) • Earn a combined 2.0 GPA or higher • Earn a combined SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68.

Athletic Event Pricing - Students • $6.00: Student gate sales at football games • $3.00: Presale STUDENT tickets – Football only. • $3.00: Student general admission to other varsity sport events. • $40.00: Student All-Sports Pass entitles entry to ALL home sports events. • $12.00 Student Home Football Pass

Athletic Event Pricing - Adults • $6.00: Adult general admission to all Varsity sports. • $8.00/Game: Reserved seating for football. $40.00/Season • $25.00 Adult Football Pass General Admission • $80.00: Adult All-Sports Pass entitles entry to all home sports events • $3.00: Adult general admission to Freshmen contests.

  32. Student and Parent Breakout Session Parents remain seated in the auditorium for additional information and a short Q & A period. Students will report to designated rooms to receive the following: • Student schedule • Locker assignment • Students will later return to the CAFETERIA for refreshments provided by our PTSA.

  33. Student Forms • On the first day of school, your child will be given a packet of important forms that must be taken home for your review. • The following forms require your signature before being turned in:

Forms Requiring Signatures • PTSA Membership Form (Optional) • Computer User Permission Form • Photo Release Authorization • Emergency Medical Authorization Form • Directory Information Form- please provide as much contact information as possible, especially e-mail addresses. • Student Handbook Signature Sheet

Infinite Campus Parent Portal • On-line/Internet tool to assist parents in monitoring academic progress, transcript information, student attendance and fees currently owed. • Parents may use password information from previous school year or can obtain password information by visiting the main office during the school year. • Parents must provide photo identification in order to receive password information.

  36. Student Drop-Off and Pick-up Location • Student drop-off is at the West side of the school in the large parking lot next to Finnie Stadium. No cars are permitted in the front of the building from 7 - 7:30 A. M. and 2:00-2:30 P. M. daily. • All parent vehicles should exit near the tennis courts onto Maple Street. • Drivers should remain patient and plan ahead for inclement weather conditions that often cause delays and congestion in the parking lot.

  37. Instructional Fees • Full Time Students-$20 • Part Time Students-$10 • Activity Fee for Joining a Club-$10 • Athletic Fee-$80 per sport

Federal Lunch Program • Applications for free and reduced lunches can be obtained by visiting our district website and clicking on the tab “Services” and then clicking on “Nutrition Services” • Students who qualified last year for the program MUST reapply by the end of the first week of school. • Paper applications are available via your child’s guidance counselor.

Common Problems Encountered at High School • SPEAKING POORLY OF OTHERS WHICH INCLUDES: Body language or gestures Notes, text messages, social networks • POOR DECISION MAKING Group mentality (following along) Not thinking pending actions through • LOST MISSING/STOLEN ITEMS Money, IPODS, cell phones

  40. Advice to Parents • Know your child’s friends including complete names, phone number and address • Monitor their whereabouts • Monitor computer activities closely • Monitor cell phone usage • Scrutinize their room and vehicle when of driving age.

  41. Berea High Open House • Please join us for our open house on Thursday, September 6th at 6:45 pm. • Open house is geared toward all parents of students in grades 9-12. • Great opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, follow their daily schedule and experience Berea High School.
