  1. Monday, March 18, 2012 Welcome to Reader’s Workshop! Please do the following: • Grab a note card and handout from the front table. • Find the desk with your name on it. • Complete the top of side A of the handout.

  2. Please write the following on the NOTE CARD: • Name • Nickname • Birthday • Parents/Guardians Names (first & last) • Parents/Guardians Contact Numbers (if you know it) • Parents/Guardians Email (if you know it)

  3. Intro to Mrs. Koyl • Three Things to Know: • Recovering coffee addict (I try to only drink the caffeinated stuff when I’m really tired) • Easily distracted (just think Doug from UP) • Married to my wonderful hubby for 14 months (check out my gorgeous ring, ladies!)

  4. My husband Mitchell (and me!)

  5. Things to Know About RW • Grades: • Prepared (personal book, pencil, journal/folder) • Weekly Assignments (correspond to strategy) • Personal Reading Books (checked daily) • Clock Partners / Seating • Journals & Folders • Silent Reading • Abandon Slips/ Book Reviews

  6. Classroom Procedures • Entering the class – Come in quietly, grab your folder and journal, sharpen your pencil if necessary, go to your seat, and begin reading quietly. Sometimes I might have a journal posted – always check the board when you come in! • Finishing work early – If you finish an in-class activity early, please read silently. Do NOT distract your classmates!

  7. Classroom Procedures • Backroom – If you go into the back room without my permission, it is an immediate after school detention (no exceptions!). • Passes – There are NO PASSES in our classroom. Get your stuff done before or after class. If you forget something in your locker and go after class has started, it’s a tardy. • Getting out of your seat – Do NOT get out of your seat without asking. If you need something, please raise your hand.

  8. Classroom Procedures • Tardy Policy – I know it’s difficult to hear the bell but learn to keep an eye on your watch/phone. You must be in the room, in your seat, by the time I come in from the hallway. If you come unprepared for class and need to retrieve something from your locker (homework, journal, pencil, etc) or borrow from me, it is a tardy. Your fourth tardy will earn you an after school detention. Nine tardies will earn you an office referral.

  9. Classroom Procedures • Make-up Work – In this class, we typically don’t have a lot of take-home work. Most often, you will be marked exempt if you were absent for an in-class activity.

  10. Classroom Procedures • End of class – The bell does NOT dismiss. DO NOT get up and walk towards the door until I have dismissed you. • Attention – When my hand goes up and I count down, the room must be quiet by the time I reach zero. Otherwise I will start adding time on to the end of class.

  11. Classroom Discipline • If a student chooses to be disrespectful, I will use the following four basic steps, but I may skip steps or improvise depending on the severity of the situation. • Verbal Warning • Verbal Warning & Discussion (out in the hall or after class on YOUR time) – may include loss of privilege and/or parent contact • After School Detention & Parent Contact • Office Referral

  12. “Could It Be True???” Get ready to “check” side A.
