  3. Methodology and sampling • Methodology: interviews, surveys, focus group, document reviews • Participants: • POE = 4 • DOEs = 12 • school directors=84 • teachers=302 • Other =84 Community Groups

De-motivation factors • low salary • poor management from supervisor/director • salary deduction and delay • 59% whose salary is deducted stated that this was demotivating factors • 72% of respondents who experienced salary delay in receipt of salary sated that it has significant impact on their motivation. • salary payments were frequently 1-2 weeks late. • limited capacity development.

Current motivation of Teachers • 50.5% of teachers were very motivated • 33.7% said they were fairly motivated. • The most common reasons for being highly motivated • want to help students • want to provide good education • love teaching • Overall, 67% felt that their career is interesting or very interesting.

  16. Teachers’ Opinion on Teaching Career by Levels of Education

  17. Recommendations: • The Government should continue to increase salaries for teachers • Speed the process of transferring salary through bank system and minimizing informal deduction • MoEYS, PoE and DoE should ensure a better provision and distribution of teaching and learning materials.
