  1. Act IV, Scene ii

  2. Throughout the discussion with Othello, Desdemona still does understand the problem; finally, Othello calls her a whore. What is Desdemona’s reaction? Desdemona denies it, and she seems to be in a state of shock from the accusation.

  3. After she recovers, what seems to be her plan? It appears that Desdemona is going to try to remind Othello of their wedding night. In so doing, she hopes to convince him that he is the only one she loves.

  4. Iago, Emilia, and Desdemona discuss how it could have happened that Othello has called her “that cunning whore,” a phrase that she will not even repeat. What does Emilia think of Othello’s accusations? Emilia says that some villain must have slandered Desdemona to somehow advance himself. She suspects that the same man spread the rumor and the Moor (Othello) and herself.

  5. What is Iago’s reaction to Emilia’s comments? Iago calls Emilia a fool. Obviously, her guess is too close to the truth and makes Iago uncomfortable.

  6. Roderigo shows up. What is his complaint to Iago? Despite the number of jewels Roderigo has given Iago to give to Desdemona, no good has come of it. Roderigo says, “I have wasted myself out of my means” and suspects that Iago has duped (fooled) him.

  7. Once again, however, Iago wins Roderigo back to his side. How? Iago flatters Roderigo’s resolution and courage and promises that if tomorrow night Roderigo does not get what he desires, Iago will gladly give up his own life.

  8. Iago makes up a story to trick Roderigo. What is it he wants Roderigo to do? Iago wants Roderigo to waylay (ambush) and kill Cassio.
